This evening prayer for forgiving others is meant for the end of the day, when the hurts you carried through the hours are still close to the surface. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you walk inside, or on the edge of the bed with the lights low. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs to go further.

Evening Prayer for Forgiving Others

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You what I am still holding. There was a word that cut me, a silence that hurt, a promise that was broken, and I have turned it over more times than I can count. I do not want to take that resentment to my pillow. Help me name the wrong plainly, without pretending it did not happen, and then help me set it down into Your hands.

I confess that I want the other person to feel the weight of what they did. I rehearse what I should have said, and I keep score in the dark. Soften that part of me tonight. Show me where my own pride has been feeding this, and forgive me for the ways I have pulled away or hardened my tone. Give me the courage to release their debt to me, even if they never say sorry, and even if the relationship cannot be restored the way I hoped.

Be near to them as well, Father. Whatever brought them to the hurt they caused, meet them there with mercy. Protect me while I sleep, and let my dreams be free of replaying the argument. When I wake, help me remember that I have been forgiven much, and let that memory shape how I speak to the people I love. Thank You for the grace that has reached me. Keep my heart tender through this night. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I am still holding this hurt. I choose to release it to You now. Forgive me for the anger I have nursed, and help me let go of the account I keep against them. Guard my heart while I rest, and remind me of the mercy You have shown me. Let me wake lighter than I went to sleep. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, letting each part land. Ask God to make you kind and tender-hearted when you remember the hurt, and to give you the same forgiveness He has already given you in Christ.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Read this as a pattern for the night. Thank God for the patience He has shown you, and ask Him to help you bear with the one who wronged you, even when the feeling of injury is still raw.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Let this passage humble you without crushing you. Ask the Lord to show you where forgiveness is needed in your own heart, and to make your willingness to forgive a real response to His grace.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray about the way God deals with sin. Ask Him to remove the old wound from the center of your thoughts tonight, so that you are not returning to it again and again.

Mark 11:25

Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.

(WEB)

Read this before you close your eyes. Ask God to show you anyone you are still holding something against, and pray for the freedom that comes from setting that burden down.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed place for this prayer, such as the chair by your bed or the spot where you plug in your phone to charge. Before you begin, put something in your hands that helps you stay present, like a folded blanket, a cup of water, or your Bible resting open. Some people find it helpful to hold their own wrist or to open their palms upward as they speak, a small gesture that says the hurt is being handed over rather than gripped tighter.

If the wound involves someone you live or work with, consider asking a spouse, a close friend, or a prayer partner to pray this with you, or to pray it for you on the days when your own words feel thin. A trusted person can hold you to the commitment to forgive without rushing your feelings. Return to this prayer on nights when the resentment rises again, and let each repetition be another small release.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgives completely settle your heart tonight and keep you in His peace. May the weight you have carried be lifted from your shoulders, and may you rest in the knowledge that you are loved. Sleep well, and wake to a new day held gently in His hands.
