This evening prayer for loved ones is written to be spoken at the end of the day, when you want to hand the people you care about into God’s keeping before you rest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and worries that are on your heart tonight.

Evening Prayer for Loved Ones

Lord, the day is closing, and I bring the people I love to you. You know where each of them has been today: the job that drained them, the conversation that did not go well, the test results they are waiting on, the bills that keep them awake. You see the things they have not told anyone. I ask you to meet them in those places and give them rest that goes deeper than sleep.

Father, watch over the ones who are far away and the ones who are close enough to touch. Keep the children safe in their beds and the aging parents steady through the night. Quiet the fears that come up in the dark, and remind each of them that they are not alone. Where there is grief, comfort them. Where there is anger or bitterness, soften it. Where there is tiredness, carry some of it for them.

Thank you for the good parts of this day, for the laughter at the table, the phone call that made someone smile, and the small mercies nobody else noticed. Guard our homes tonight and let peace settle over every room. Whatever tomorrow holds, let them wake knowing you have not stopped thinking about them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired, and so are the people I love. Hold them tonight, especially those who are hurting or afraid. Give them sleep that refreshes and a heart that knows you are near. Guard their going out and their coming in. Thank you for today. Into your hands I commit them now. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this as you lie down, asking God to give your loved ones the kind of rest that comes from trusting him with what they cannot control tonight.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this promise of protection to ask God to guard each person by name, both as they leave home tomorrow and as they return.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when worry has kept someone you love from sleeping, and ask God to give them rest he has already provided.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring to God the weary and burdened people in your life, naming the specific weights they carry, and invite them to come to Jesus for relief.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Pray this for loved ones who are carrying anxieties they have not handed over, asking God to receive their cares as only he can.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment after the lights are dimmed and the day’s noise has died down, perhaps in the kitchen after the dishes or on the edge of a bed before turning in. Keep a list of names on a notecard or in your phone so you can pray through each person slowly rather than rushing past them. Some people find it helps to touch something in the room while they pray, such as the back of a chair or a child’s blanket, as a physical reminder of the people being lifted up.

If you live with others, invite them to join you, or let someone in the family take a turn reading the prayer aloud. You can also pray this over the phone with a friend or relative who lives far away, trading names and promises until you both feel the day has been placed in God’s hands.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your loved ones safe through this night and bring them to the morning rested and whole. May his peace settle on every person you have named, and may they know, even in the dark, that they are held. Sleep well, and trust that the one who keeps watch never closes his eyes.
