This short morning prayer is for couples who want to bring their marriage before God before the day pulls them in different directions. It works best in the first few minutes after waking, or over coffee before the house fills up with noise. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same needs.

Short Morning Prayer for Our Marriage

Lord, thank You for this new morning and for giving us another day together. Before we rush into our calendars, we ask You to be the first voice in our home. Guard our hearts from resentment that might have settled overnight, and soften anything that feels hard between us. Help us to speak kindly when we are tired, and to listen before we answer.

We bring You the day ahead: the work, the errands, the school runs, the phone calls and the decisions waiting for us. Where we will be stretched, give us patience. Where we will be tempted to be short with each other, remind us of the love we promised. Let us notice each other’s needs without being asked, and let us be quick to forgive when we fall short.

Father, we ask that You would keep our marriage rooted in You. Bind us together in faithfulness, humility and gentleness, and make our home a place of peace for each other and for anyone who walks through our door. We trust You with our tomorrows as well as this one. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we give You this day together. Slow our words and open our ears. Keep us patient with each other when we are tired, and help us remember that we are on the same side. Bless the work ahead and the people we will meet. Let our love for each other show Your love to the world. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

Read this slowly and let each quality become a request. Ask God to build patience, kindness and humility into the way you speak and act toward your spouse today.

Ephesians 4:2-3

2 With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

Pray this verse by admitting that your home and marriage depend on the Lord, not on your own effort. Ask Him to build what you cannot build by yourself.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this together while still sitting on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table, before phones come out. Holding a warm mug or simply reaching for each other’s hand can help you stay present and keep the moment from becoming rushed. If you pray alone, you can still say the words aloud for your spouse and picture them beside you.

If your marriage is going through a hard season, you might invite a close friend, mentor or small group leader to pray this with you once a week. Let them carry your names too. Many couples find that a regular morning rhythm, even a brief one, makes it easier to bring conflict and worry to God before they grow larger.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you today. May He keep your hearts soft toward one another, give you grace for every hard conversation, and fill your home with His peace. May your marriage reflect His faithfulness, and may you feel His nearness with you all day long.
