This evening prayer for our nation is for the close of the day, when you want to hand the country, its leaders and its people into God’s hands before you sleep. Pray it aloud as written, or read it once and then speak in your own words about the things weighing on you. Either way, it gives you a steady place to begin.
Evening Prayer for Our Nation
Lord, as this day closes, we bring our nation before you. We have heard the news, read the headlines and felt the tension in conversations at work, at the grocery store and across the dinner table. Some of us are worried about the economy and whether families can keep up with rent and groceries. Some of us are grieving over violence in our streets, and some are tired of arguments that never seem to end. Look on all of it with mercy. Show us where we have fallen short, and give us honesty to admit it without despair.
We pray for those who govern, for the president and members of Congress, for governors and mayors, judges, police officers, teachers and soldiers. Give them wisdom that is larger than their own interests, and keep them from pride and fear. Protect the vulnerable, the child who goes to bed hungry, the widow living alone, the immigrant afraid of a knock on the door, and the families in hospitals tonight. Heal the divisions between neighbors, and teach us to listen before we speak. Keep us free and keep us kind.
Now we set down the weight of this day and trust you with the night. Guard our sleep and our borders of peace, and let morning find us more faithful than we were at dawn. We rest in you, the one who does not slumber. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, you see our country tonight, with its hurts and its hopes. Calm our anger and steady our fear. Give wisdom to those in authority and care to those who are struggling. Protect the people we love and the strangers we will never meet. We release this day into your hands and ask for rest. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
1 Timothy 2:1-2
1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.
(WEB)
Paul urges that prayers be made for all people, especially for kings and those in authority. Pray this over the leaders of our nation tonight, asking that they govern in a way that lets the people live quietly and peacefully.
Psalm 46:1-3
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

When the ground seems to shift under the country, this psalm reminds you where refuge is found. Read it slowly and let it steady your breathing before you turn off the light.
Psalm 127:1-2
1 Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain. 2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Pray this for the nation’s families and workers, asking God to watch over the work of our hands and grant rest to those who need it.
Jeremiah 29:7
Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”
(WEB)
God told exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived and to pray for it. Let this shape your evening prayer, asking for the good of your town and your country as well as your own household.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
The psalmist says he lies down and sleeps in peace because the Lord alone makes him dwell in safety. Use this verse as you lie down, naming the fears you carry for the nation and placing them in God’s care.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer after dinner or just before bed, when the noise of the day has quieted and the news cycle has slowed. Sit on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table with a cup of tea in your hands, and let your hands rest open on your lap as a sign that you are letting go. If you have a family, read it together and invite each person to add one concern for the country.
A neighbor, a small group or a parent praying with a child can take turns reading the sections aloud. You might also keep a short list on your phone or in a notebook of names and issues to return to each night, so the prayer grows with the seasons of the nation and does not become a one-time reaction to the news.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps Israel neither slumber nor sleep watch over you and over the people of this land tonight. May he give rest to the weary, courage to the afraid and wisdom to those who lead, and may you wake to a morning lit by his faithfulness.
