This evening prayer for peace and protection is written for the close of the day, when the house is quiet and the worries of the day are still close at hand. Pray it at bedtime, while lying down or sitting on the edge of your bed, to hand the day and the night over to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Evening Prayer for Peace and Protection

Father, the day is ending and I bring it to you. I think about the tasks I finished and the ones I did not, the conversations that went well and the ones that went badly, the messages I still have not answered. Some of what I carried today was heavy, and some of it I could not carry at all. I set it down now. Take what I could not finish, forgive what I did wrong, and receive what I could not manage. Quiet my thoughts so I can rest.

Lord, watch over my home tonight. Guard the people I love, the ones who are awake and the ones who are asleep. Keep them from harm, from fear, and from sickness. Watch over the roads they will travel tomorrow and the decisions waiting for us in the morning. I do not ask for a life without trouble, only that you would be near in it. Let me sleep without fear of what the dark might hold, knowing that you do not sleep and that you keep watch over all of us.

Thank you for the good things from today, even the small ones: a warm meal, a kind word, the ordinary mercy of another day. Fill my heart with peace that does not depend on how the day went. Be my shelter tonight and my rest. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I give you this day. Hold my family and my home through the night. Calm my mind and keep my heart at peace. Protect us from what we cannot see, and let me wake to your mercy in the morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a good place to start at bedtime, because it puts sleep in the hands of God. Pray it slowly, letting each phrase settle before the next. Ask God to make you able to lie down and rest without a list of worries running through your mind.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

David wrote this in a time of danger and still chose to sleep. Pray this verse as a statement of trust, thanking God that he sustains you through the night. Name the specific fears you carry and ask him to keep them from waking you.

Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.

(WEB)

This verse describes God as a shelter with protecting wings. Picture yourself resting under that covering as you pray. Ask him to surround the people in your home with the same care you feel tonight.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse links peace with a mind that stays fixed on God. Pray it when your thoughts keep circling back to the same worry. Ask him to steady your attention and bring your focus back to his faithfulness.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul speaks of a peace that goes beyond understanding and guards the heart. Pray this verse by asking God to guard your heart and mind tonight. Let it be a request for protection from the anxious thoughts that often arrive at night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as right after you turn off the lights or just before you climb into bed. Put your phone in another room or set it face down so nothing interrupts you. If you share a home, you might pray the prayer aloud with your partner or children, taking turns with the verses. Many people find it helpful to rest one hand on the bed or a pillow while praying, as a small physical sign that they are releasing the day.

If the day was especially hard, pray the longer version slowly and then read the shorter one again before you sleep. If you wake in the night with worry, return to the shortest line, “Lord, I give you this,” and let that be enough. Keep a small notebook by the bed so you can write down what you are handing over, and leave it there until morning.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you in his care tonight and let you rest without fear. May his peace settle over your home like a quiet covering, and may his protection go before you into the morning. Sleep well, knowing that you are held.
