This prayer is for the moment when trust has been broken, whether by a betrayal, a lie, a long silence, or a hurt that keeps replaying in your mind. It is written to be prayed when you feel the distance between you and someone you love, or between you and yourself, and you do not know how to begin repairing it. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for Rebuilding Trust

Lord, you know what has happened. You know the words that were said and the promises that were broken, and you know the ache that has settled into my chest since then. I do not want to pretend it did not hurt, and I do not want to rush past it. Please meet me in the honesty of this moment and show me what is mine to carry and what is not.

I confess that I am afraid of being hurt again. Some part of me wants to build a wall so that no one can get close enough to disappoint me, and some part of me wants to force the relationship back to how it was before. Help me to be patient with both of those parts. Give me the humility to own my own mistakes, the wisdom to know what safety looks like, and the courage to take small, honest steps toward the person I am struggling to trust, or toward trusting myself again.

Father, I bring you the person on the other side of this too. Soften what needs softening in them and in me. Where repentance is needed, let it come freely. Where forgiveness is needed, give me enough of your grace to offer it, even if I do not feel ready. Let my words be true, let my actions match them over time, and let us both trust that you are faithful even when we are not. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel the hurt of broken trust right now, and I need your help. Steady my heart and quiet my fear. Show me the next honest step, whether that is a word to say, a boundary to set, or a silence to keep. Give me patience with myself and with the one who hurt me, and remind me that you are faithful even when people are not. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1-3

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

(WEB)

Pray this when the ground beneath your relationships feels unstable. Ask God to be the refuge you run to first, so that your sense of safety is anchored in him rather than in whether the other person has earned your confidence yet.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring your own understanding to God honestly. When you are tempted to trust only what you can figure out or control, ask him to direct your steps and make your paths straight.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you feel that you have run out of chances. Thank God that his faithfulness is renewed each morning, and ask him to help you receive his steady mercy in the place where your trust has been wounded.

Ephesians 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this when bitterness is crowding out forgiveness. Ask God to remove the anger and harshness that have gathered in your heart, and to make you kind and tender-hearted toward the person who has hurt you, as far as it is safe and right to do so.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you do not know what to do next. Ask him for the wisdom to see clearly, to speak carefully, and to decide well, trusting that he gives generously to those who ask.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the early morning or late at night, when the hurt tends to feel loudest and the house is quiet. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps with a cup of tea or a notebook in your hands. Writing down the specific things you are afraid of can make the prayer more honest, and you can return to the list over the coming days as God shows you what to release and what to address.

You might also ask a trusted friend, pastor, or family member to pray it with you or for you, especially if the broken trust feels too heavy to carry alone. Trust is rebuilt in community as much as it is in private, and having someone stand with you in prayer can remind you that you are not the only one hoping for healing.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps every promise guard your heart and steady your steps. May he give you wisdom for the next conversation, patience for the slow work ahead, and peace that does not depend on how quickly things return to normal. May you know that you are seen, held, and loved, and that the God who restores can make even this broken place into something new.
