This short prayer is for rebuilding trust after it has been damaged, whether by a broken promise, a betrayal, a long silence, or a relationship that no longer feels safe. Pray it when you feel the ache of wanting to trust again but not knowing how, or when you need words for a moment that feels too heavy to find your own. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for Rebuilding Trust

Lord, you know how hard it is for me to open my heart again. Someone let me down, and I am still carrying the hurt of it, along with the questions about whether I can believe what I am told anymore. Some days I feel guarded even around people who have done nothing wrong, and I am tired of living that way. Help me see my own fear clearly, and do not let it turn into a wall I cannot climb over.

I do not ask you to make everything feel fine tonight. I ask you to be near, to steady the places in me that are shaking, and to show me what is trustworthy in my life. Where I need to forgive, give me the courage to do it honestly. Where I need to set a boundary, give me wisdom so I am neither careless nor cold. And where trust needs to be rebuilt slowly, give me patience with myself and with the people involved. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I feel the sting of broken trust right now, and I do not know what to do with it. Hold me steady in this moment. Remind me that you are faithful even when people are not, and help me take the next small step, whether that is a breath, a conversation, or a choice to wait. I trust you with what I cannot repair today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

Pray this verse when fear is pushing you to pull back from everyone. Name the fear out loud, then tell God you will trust him in that moment, even if you only manage a few words.

Psalm 62:8

Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pour out the full weight of your hurt before God. Honest, unfiltered prayer is a real way of trusting him with what has happened.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are tempted to rely only on your own reading of people. Ask God to guide your steps and to show you where wisdom and caution belong.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you are weary of starting over. Thank him for mercies that renew each morning, and ask him to renew your hope along with them.

Romans 5:5

And hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the Spirit to fill your heart with a steady hope that does not depend on how others behave. Ask God to let his love be the foundation you build on.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time of day, such as early in the morning before the noise begins or in the evening when the house has settled. Sit somewhere you feel safe, and keep a pen nearby in case a specific memory or worry comes up that you want to bring to God. Some people find it helps to hold a cup of tea or rest a hand over their heart while they pray, something that keeps the body involved in the prayer.

You might also ask a trusted friend, a mentor, or someone in your church to pray this with you or for you. Trust is rebuilt in community as well as in private, and it can help to hear another voice asking God for the same healing. Return to this prayer as often as you need it, even if the words feel the same each time, because repetition can become a steady place to stand.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who is faithful to every generation keep your heart steady as you begin again. May he give you discernment to see clearly, gentleness toward yourself and others, and peace that holds even while trust is still growing back. May you walk slowly, safely, and in the company of the one who never breaks his promises.
