This short prayer is for anyone who is sick, recovering from surgery, or waiting on a body to heal. You can pray it when you wake up in pain, before a hard treatment, or during the long afternoons of rest. It is written so you can read it aloud exactly as it appears, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.

Short Prayer for Recovery From Illness

Lord, you know exactly how I feel this morning. My body is tired, and some days it is hard to believe I will get my strength back. I feel weak, and I worry about the appointments, the bills, the work I cannot do, and the people who have to carry things for me while I rest. Please meet me in the middle of it. Calm the fear that keeps me awake and give me patience with the slow pace of healing.

Heal my body in the way you see best, whether that means a quick recovery or a long road that I walk one day at a time. Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses caring for me, and let the medicine do the work it was made to do. Thank you for the people who check on me, bring me food, and sit with me in quiet. Hold me close while I wait, and let me rest in your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am sick and I am tired. Be near me right now. Heal what is broken, ease the pain where it hurts, and steady my mind when fear comes in. Give me enough strength for this hour, and help me trust you with the next. Thank you that I am not alone in this. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and let it remind you that God sees you on the sickbed. Pray that he would sustain you through the hours when you cannot rise, and thank him for tending you when no one else can.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God as the one who binds up wounds. Name the specific hurts you carry, in body and in heart, and ask him to begin the work of mending them.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

When your energy is low, this promise points to the strength that comes from waiting on the Lord. Pray for renewed strength one small step at a time, rather than all at once.

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, O the LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.

(WEB)

Jeremiah cried out for healing and trusted God to answer. Let this verse shape your request, asking for restoration while also placing the timing and the outcome in God’s hands.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Anxiety often grows alongside illness. Pray this passage as a way of bringing each worry to God in turn, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind while you recover.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the day’s medicine, appointments, or visitors begin. Sit somewhere you can be comfortable, such as a favorite chair, the edge of the bed, or a window where you can see daylight. If your hands are restless or weak, hold a cup of water, a blanket, or a small object that reminds you of home, and let your fingers rest on it while you pray.

You can also pray this prayer with someone who cares for you. A spouse, a friend, a parent, or a church member can read it aloud while you listen, or they can pray the shorter version over you in the evening. Invite them to add their own petitions, since illness often brings concerns that are easy to forget when you are worn out.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who made your body be near to you in every hour of this season. May he steady your breathing, lift your spirit, and give you rest that restores. May the hands that care for you be guided with skill, and may you feel his peace settle over you as you heal.
