This is a daily prayer for the year ahead, a way to bring the unknown months before God before the calendar fills up with plans, pressures and surprises. Pray it in the morning, at the start of a new year, after a hard season ends, or whenever you feel the next stretch of life stretching out in front of you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Daily Prayer for the Year Ahead

Lord, I come to you before I look at my calendar, my bills, or the news. Another year is opening in front of me, and I don’t know what it will hold. Some of it I’m looking forward to. Some of it I’m dreading. There are conversations I need to have, decisions I haven’t made, and people I love whose health and happiness keep me awake at night. Be with me in all of it. Give me steady hands for the work you’ve given me and a clear head when the choices pile up.

Father, I ask for help with the ordinary days, not just the big moments. Help me keep my promises, be patient with the people in my house and at my job, and notice the small chances to be kind. When I’m tired, remind me that you don’t get tired. When I’m anxious about money, work, or the future of my children, quiet my heart and remind me that you have already been to tomorrow. Protect the people I love, guide the places I go, and make me faithful in whatever this year asks of me. Thank you that I don’t walk into it alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this year is a long road and I feel the weight of it already. Walk ahead of me into each month, each meeting, each hard phone call. Give me enough strength for today and trust that you’ll give me tomorrow’s strength when it arrives. Keep my family close to you, steady my worries, and help me take the next faithful step. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When the year feels loud with demands, use this verse to slow your breathing and remember who is in charge. Ask God to help you be still long enough to recognize his presence in the coming weeks.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are making plans you can’t fully see the end of. Ask for the humility to trust God’s direction over your own certainty, and for the willingness to let him make your paths straight.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Bring this passage to God when you wonder whether you have enough left for another year. Thank him for mercies that are new each morning, and ask him to show you one of them before the day is out.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Read this verse over any situation you already know will be difficult this year. Pray that God would be with you in the deep water and the fire, and that you would not be left to face them alone.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when worry starts shaping your plans for the year. Name each anxious thought to God in prayer, thank him for what he has already done, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time before the rest of the household wakes, or during a short break in the middle of the day, when you can sit with a cup of coffee and a pen. Some people write the prayer in a notebook each January and return to it when a month feels heavy. If you have hands free, try holding an open palm upward while you pray, a simple reminder that you are receiving rather than gripping. Keep the prayer somewhere you will see it, such as the bathroom mirror or the first page of your planner.

You might also invite someone else to pray it with you, a spouse, a close friend, or a small group at church. Let them add their own requests for the year ahead, and take turns speaking the lines aloud. Hearing another person pray over your future can loosen the knot of fear more than working through it alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every month of this year and walk beside you through each season. May he hold the people you love in his care, steady your steps when the road is unclear, and give you grace for the days that feel too long. May you know, in ordinary moments, that you are seen and kept.
