This simple prayer is for the moment a child walks into school for the first time, whether that is preschool, kindergarten, or the first day at a new building. Pray it the morning of the first day, in the car on the way, or at bedtime the night before. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own child’s name and worries into your own words.
Simple Prayer for a Child Starting School
Father, thank you for this child and for the years you have given us together. Today they are stepping into a room full of new faces, new rules and new noise. Some of those faces will be kind, and some will not be, and we do not know yet which ones they will meet first. Give them courage when the hallway feels too long and the door feels too big. Help them remember that you are with them on the other side of it, just as you were in the kitchen this morning.
Lord, be with their teacher too. Give her patience for the questions, wisdom for the quiet child in the corner, and joy for the day ahead. Let our child find one friend today, and let them be a friend to someone who needs one. When they are tired, or hungry, or confused about a math sheet, remind them that they are known and loved, and that making a mistake does not change that. Keep their heart soft toward learning and their hands ready to help. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, my child is starting school today and my heart is full. Go before them into that building and make the way ready. Calm their nerves and give them a brave heart. Surround them with good teachers and kind classmates. Help them remember that you are close, even when I am not. Thank you for this new beginning. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
The morning of the first day is often rushed, so try praying with your child before they leave, while they are still at the table or buckling their shoes. Hold their hand or rest a hand on their shoulder while you speak. Children often remember the feeling of being prayed over long after they forget the exact words, so let them hear your voice steady and warm.
If you cannot be there in person, pray this prayer in the car, at your desk, or in the quiet moments after the school day ends. You can also invite a grandparent, a friend, or your spouse to pray it with you, or to pray it for your child while they are at school. Many families keep a short prayer card in a lunchbox or backpack as a reminder that someone at home is still praying.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before this child into every classroom and every new friendship. May he give them courage on the hard days and joy on the good ones. May they grow in wisdom, kindness and curiosity, and may they know, wherever they walk, that they are never walking alone.
