This night prayer for self control is for the end of the day, when you lie down aware of the words you spoke too quickly, the food you reached for without thinking, the screen you kept scrolling past midnight, and the temper that flared at someone you love. You can pray it before sleep, read it aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God in the same spirit.

Night Prayer for Self Control

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it really was. I was impatient with the people I love and quick to answer when I should have listened. I said things I wish I could take back. I ate and spent and scrolled in ways that did not serve me, and I told myself I would stop tomorrow. Forgive me for the moments I let my appetites, my moods and my habits rule me instead of your Spirit. I am grateful that you see every part of this day and still receive me.

Father, give me rest tonight, and let me release what I cannot fix. Quiet the replaying in my mind. Help me put my phone down and stop chasing one more thing. Where I felt the pull to lose my temper, guard my tongue while I sleep. Where I felt the pull to overindulge, teach me to notice the hunger underneath and bring it to you first. Strengthen the places in me that are still weak, and show me one small, honest step to take when I wake.

Protect me through the night, Lord, and watch over the people in my home while they sleep. Keep my heart soft and my hands still. Tomorrow I will need your patience, your wisdom and your steady hand, and I am asking now for all three. Thank you that your mercy begins again each morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I have fallen short today. Forgive me for the words I regret and the choices I wish I had made differently. Calm what is restless in me and hold my tongue, my appetites and my screen in your hands. Give me rest tonight and a fresh start in the morning. Thank you for your mercy, which meets me again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Pray that the fruit of the Spirit, including self-control, would grow in you where you have been trying to manage everything by willpower alone. Ask God to produce this fruit in your evening habits, your speech and your appetites.

Proverbs 25:28

Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the places where you feel open and unguarded at night. Ask the Lord to build walls of wisdom and restraint around the parts of your life that have been left exposed.

Psalm 4:4

Stand in awe, and don’t sin. Search your own heart on your bed, and be still. Selah.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a call to reflect before bed. Ask God to help you search your heart quietly, confess what needs confessing, and let the stillness of the night settle your anger and restlessness.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

When you feel too weak to manage your impulses, pray this verse and trust that the Spirit helps with what you cannot put into words. Ask for help you are not able to produce yourself.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse to release the pressure to control everything. Ask God to give you rest, not as a reward for finishing your work, but as a gift from a Father who cares for you while you sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you go to sleep, ideally after you have put your phone on its charger and out of reach. Sit on the edge of your bed or kneel beside it with your hands open in your lap. If you are praying with a spouse, a roommate or a child, you can read it together, taking turns with each paragraph.

If a specific failure from the day is weighing on you, name it plainly in the prayer, then pause and let the words of forgiveness sink in. Keep a small notebook by the bed and write one line about what you want to bring to God in the morning. Many people find that a few quiet breaths before the prayer make it easier to mean what they say.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight grant you rest that restores your body and quiets your mind. May his patience be the pattern you carry into tomorrow. Whatever you did or failed to do today, may you wake to grace that is new, steady and enough.
