This short morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up knowing a hard choice is waiting. It is meant to be prayed early, before the day’s messages, meetings and conversations begin, so that the decision is placed in God’s hands before it fills your thoughts. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Short Morning Prayer for Those Facing a Difficult Decision

Lord, I come to you before the day starts, and I bring you the choice that has been sitting on my mind. I do not know yet which way is right, and some of the options frighten me. I worry about who will be hurt, what I might lose, and whether I am able to see clearly enough to choose well. Please quiet the noise in my head so I can hear what you are saying.

Give me wisdom for the conversations and tasks you place in front of me today. Help me to listen more than I speak, to ask honest questions, and to weigh each option against your word rather than only my fears. Where I need to wait, give me patience. Where I need to act, give me courage and a clear next step. Keep my heart humble, so that I am willing to hear counsel from people you have placed around me.

Whatever this day brings, let me not carry the decision alone. I trust that you know the end from the beginning and that nothing is hidden from you. Walk with me through each hour, and let my choices reflect your character. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I have a decision in front of me today and I feel unsure. Give me clarity for the next step, and help me not to panic when the options look heavy. Show me the one honest thing to do first, and give me the grace to do it. I place this choice in your hands and ask you to lead me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel you lack the sense to know what to do. Ask God plainly for wisdom, and expect him to answer generously rather than to hold back.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release your own certainty. Pray that you would stop leaning only on what you can work out, and that God would guide the path you walk today.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise of guidance for the hours ahead. Ask God to instruct you step by step, and to keep your eyes on him rather than on the outcome.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Pray this when you need to hear direction above the noise of your worries. Ask to recognize the voice that tells you the way, and to follow it when it comes.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to bring your anxiety about the decision into prayer. Ask God for a peace that steadies your heart even before the choice is settled.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this before you check your phone or open your email, ideally in the same quiet place each morning, such as a chair by a window or the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. Holding something in your hands, like a pen or your Bible, can help your attention settle. If you are able, write down the decision in one sentence before you begin, so you know exactly what you are placing before God.

You might also ask a trusted friend, spouse or pastor to pray this prayer with you or for you on the days the choice feels heaviest. Sharing the burden with someone who knows your situation can bring both comfort and wise counsel. Return to these words whenever the question resurfaces during the day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every conversation and decision today. May he give you the wisdom to see clearly, the courage to act rightly, and a peace that stays steady when the answer is not yet clear. May you rest in the knowledge that you are held, guided and loved.
