This evening prayer is for anyone who goes to bed carrying a restless mind, an unsettled heart, or a day that never quite let go. It is meant to be prayed at the end of the day, once the lights are low and before sleep arrives. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Evening Prayer for Those Seeking Peace

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I bring the conversations that went wrong, the decisions I am still turning over, and the worry that followed me from morning until now. I am tired, and some of the tiredness is in my heart as much as in my body. Take what I cannot carry any longer and set it down where you can hold it.

Quiet my thoughts now. Where my mind keeps running to tomorrow, bring it back to this hour and to the simple fact that you are awake and watching over me. Settle the knot in my chest. Let the list of things I fear to face lose its grip on me, and let me remember that I do not have to solve everything before I sleep.

Guard my rest through the night. Protect the people I love, those who are far away and those under my roof, and keep them safe while I cannot. Thank you for the good parts of this day, even the small ones I almost missed. Give me a settled sleep and a peaceful waking, and let me rise to meet the morning in your strength. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worn out and my mind will not stop. I give you this day and every worry I am still holding. Be my peace tonight. Take the weight off my shoulders, guard my sleep, and watch over the people I love. Thank you that I can rest in you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as you lie down. It names the rest that comes from trusting God to keep you, so you can let go of the need to stay alert through the night.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Let this verse remind you that the work of the day does not have to be finished before you sleep. Give God the effort you could not complete and receive the rest he offers.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the weariness you feel to Jesus in prayer. Name the specific burdens you are carrying, then ask him to give you the rest he promises.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over each anxious thought one at a time. Pray about each concern, then ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by fixing your attention on God rather than on the problems pressing in. Ask him to keep your mind steady as you drift toward sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time after you have finished your last tasks and before you get into bed. Sit on the edge of the bed or in a chair with the lamp dimmed, and keep a notebook nearby in case a worry surfaces you want to write down and leave with God. Pray slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle before you move on.

If someone shares your home, invite them to pray the prayer aloud with you, or ask a friend or family member to pray for your rest by name. Holding a hand, resting a palm on your chest, or simply breathing slowly as you speak can help your body follow what your heart is saying. Return to this prayer on nights when peace feels far away, and let its words become familiar enough to carry you when your own thoughts are scattered.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you give you rest tonight and quiet your heart. May he guard your sleep, steady your mind, and remind you that you are held. May his peace, which surpasses understanding, settle over you and go with you into the morning.
