This is a written Christian prayer for those taking an exam, whether it is a final, a licensing test, a board exam or a placement test. Pray it the morning of the exam, in the car on the way there, or in the minute before you walk into the room. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your worries are different.

Christian Prayer for Those Taking an Exam

Lord, you know everything I have studied and everything I have not. You know the hours I spent at the kitchen table and the nights I gave up on a chapter and went to bed anxious. Today I bring my mind to you. Calm the racing thoughts that tell me I will blank out, that I am not ready, that everyone else knows more than I do. Steady my breathing and help me remember what I have actually learned, not just what I fear I forgot.

Give me clear thinking as I read each question. Help me slow down enough to understand what is being asked, and wise enough to skip what I cannot answer and come back to it. If I make mistakes, let them be honest ones, and let me not be ruled by them while I work. Guard my honesty in the room, and let me give the work my best without cheating or cutting corners. Whatever the result, let my worth rest in you and not in a number or a grade. Thank you that you are with me in the room, even when no one else can see you there. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am nervous and my mind feels scattered. Quiet my heart and bring back to me what I have studied. Help me read carefully, think clearly and answer honestly. Let me remember that you are with me now, and that my life is held by you whatever happens next. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names anxiety directly and then turns it into prayer. When the exam fear rises, bring each specific worry to God by name, and ask for the peace that does not depend on the outcome.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel the pressure to understand everything yourself. Ask God to direct the way you think through each question, trusting him for the parts you cannot control.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When a question stumps you, this verse is a plain request for wisdom. Ask God for it in the moment, believing he is generous in giving it.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when your confidence drops. Pray that God would strengthen you in the room and remind you that you are not facing the test by yourself.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Use this as a refuge when the room feels overwhelming. Ask God to be your shelter and steady help, something you can return to between questions.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the full prayer the night before, while you are still at home and not rushing. Then pray the shorter version on the way in, with a hand on your chest or a steady breath before you sit down. Writing the shorter prayer on the inside of your notebook or on a card in your pocket means you can look at it during a break, even in the middle of a hard section.

You might also ask a friend, parent, pastor or small group to pray for you by name before the exam. Send them a text telling them the date and time, so they know when to lift you up. Many people find it helpful to pray for the other students taking the same test too, which turns anxiety into care for people around you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into the room and stay with you through every question. May your mind be clear, your heart be calm and your honesty be steady. And may you rest in the knowledge that your identity was settled long before this exam and remains secure after it is over.
