This is a daily prayer for those traveling, whether you are heading to work across town, boarding a long flight, or driving a family through the night. It is meant to be prayed in the morning before you leave, or at the door with your bag in hand. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs to go further.
Daily Prayer for Those Traveling
Lord, you know every road I will take today, every highway, runway, sidewalk and detour. Before I step out the door, I ask you to go ahead of me and make the way safe. Watch over the drivers around me, the pilots and conductors who guide others, and the people I pass who are tired, distracted or in a hurry. Keep my own attention sharp and my hands steady on the wheel or the handrail. Where there are delays, give me patience instead of anger, and let me remember that you are not caught off guard by anything on the schedule.
I also carry worries that don’t fit in a suitcase. Some of us are leaving people behind, and some of us are heading toward news we are afraid to hear. Calm the fears that rise when the plans change or the phone goes quiet. Guard the people I love who are traveling with me or waiting for me at the other end. Give me wisdom for the decisions I will face on the road, and let me be a kind and honest companion to anyone who shares my journey today. Bring me home again, in your time and in your peace. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am on my way, and you are already here. Keep me safe on this trip and keep the people I’m traveling with safe too. Calm my nerves and clear my mind, and help me drive, walk or wait with care and patience. Bring us where we need to go, and bring us home again. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 121:8
The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as a promise over your going out and your coming in. It names the whole day, from the first step out the door to the moment you walk back through it.
Psalm 91:11
For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let it steady you before a long drive or a crowded station. Ask God to give his angels charge over your path, and thank him for the ways you have already been protected.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Use this verse when your plans are uncertain or the route has changed. Ask God to direct each turn you cannot see yet, and to make your path straight where it feels tangled.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Pray this when fear rises at a gate, a checkpoint or a bad stretch of road. Name the specific fear you feel, then hand it to God in the words of this promise.
Psalm 107:30
Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.
(WEB)
Bring this verse to mind when the trip hits rough water, whether that means turbulence, heavy traffic or a missed connection. Ask God to bring you safely to the harbor you are headed for.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it at the door, with your keys, bag or ticket already in hand. Tying the words to a physical action helps them stick, and it marks the moment you hand the day over to God. If you are traveling in a car, you might pray it before you buckle up. If you are taking the train or a flight, pray it while you wait at the gate or stand on the platform.
Invite someone else to pray it with you, whether that is a spouse, a child, a friend who is driving, or a fellow traveler in your group. You can also send the prayer to a family member who is staying home, so they can pray it for you while you are on the road. Ask them to pray for you again when you arrive safely.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you and keep your steps steady. May he surround you with peace on every mile and guard the hearts of those who travel with you. Wherever the road leads today, may you arrive in safety and return in gladness.
