This prayer is for those working at night, whether you are a nurse on a long shift, a driver on the road after dark, a baker who starts before the city wakes, or someone who simply cannot sleep while others rest. It is best prayed in the evening as your shift begins or in the quiet hours when you are tired and alone with your thoughts. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Prayer for Those Working at Night
Lord, you do not sleep, and you never stop watching over the world. Tonight I am giving you the hours when most people are in bed and I am still awake, still working, still carrying things that need attention. Be with me in the long stretches when the building is quiet and the clock seems to move slowly. Keep my mind clear, my hands steady and my patience steady too, especially when I am tired and the work feels heavy.
Father, protect me on the roads, in the parking lot, and in every place where the dark makes things harder to see. Guard the people I serve, the ones who are sick, afraid, or far from home tonight. Give me courage when something goes wrong, wisdom when I am unsure, and the humility to ask for help. Thank you for the coffee that keeps me going, for the coworkers beside me, and for the small moments of kindness that light up a difficult night. When my shift ends, carry me home safely and let me rest without guilt. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and still on duty. Keep me alert and careful, and let my work serve the people in front of me tonight. Watch over my drive home and my sleep in the morning. Thank you that you are awake when I am not, and that I can rest in your care while I do what I have been given to do. Amen.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

Bring this invitation to God as you end your shift and head home. Name the burdens you carried tonight, both seen and unseen, and ask Jesus to give you the rest he promised to all who come to him weary.
How to Pray This Prayer
The prayer works well at the start of your shift, while you are still fresh and can speak it slowly. You might pray it sitting in your car before you go in, or quietly in the break room with a cup of tea in your hands. Some people find it helpful to pray with their hands busy, folding laundry, stocking shelves, or wiping down a counter, so that the work and the prayer move together through the night.
You can also pray this for someone else who works nights, such as a spouse, a child, a neighbor or a friend. Speak their name in place of “me” and ask God to hold them in the same way. A family member at home might pray it while the night worker is away, which can be a quiet way to stay connected across the hours you are apart.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who never sleeps keep you awake in wisdom and asleep in peace. May he meet you in the dark hours and walk with you to the morning. May your work be honored, your body be strengthened, and your heart be held. The Lord bless you and keep you through this night and every night ahead.
