This simple prayer is for those starting over: after a job loss, a divorce, a move, a recovery, or any season when life has to be rebuilt from the ground up. Pray it in the morning, at the kitchen table, in the car before you walk into a new place, or late at night when the to-do list feels impossibly long. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for Those Starting Over

Lord, I am beginning again, and some days that feels exciting and some days it feels like I am standing at the bottom of a hill I never chose to climb. You know the details I keep turning over at two in the morning: the bills that need paying, the people I have to face, the habits I do not know how to build yet, and the fear that I will get it wrong. Thank you that none of this is hidden from you. Nothing about this new chapter has caught you by surprise.

Help me take the next small step rather than trying to see the whole road at once. Give me wisdom for the decisions in front of me today, and patience with myself when I stumble. Where I feel ashamed of how I got here, meet me with mercy and not condemnation. Where I feel behind others my age, remind me that my life is not a race I have to win. Quiet the voices that say it is too late, and let me hear your voice more clearly than theirs.

Be near to me in the ordinary moments: the first cup of coffee in a new kitchen, the phone call I dread making, the empty evening that used to be full. Give me people who will walk with me, and give me the courage to let them. I trust you with what I cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am starting over and I feel the weight of it right now. Give me the next right step, and nothing more for this minute. Steady my hands and my heart, remind me that you are with me in this, and help me trust that you are making something new even when I cannot see it yet. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

When you feel that nothing is growing yet, pray this verse slowly and ask God to show you the new thing he is already beginning. Let it remind you that a fresh start is something God does, not only something you manufacture.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read these words when yesterday’s mistakes feel heavy. Thank God that his compassions are renewed each morning, and ask him to give you fresh mercy for the day you have in front of you.

Psalm 40:2

He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of being lifted from a pit and set on firm ground. Pray it as a testimony of what you hope God will do in your own situation, and thank him for the solid footing he is building under your feet.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a claim on your identity, not only your circumstances. Ask God to help you see yourself as someone being made new in Christ, even while your life is still in transition.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes about leaving what is behind and pressing forward. Pray these words when looking back keeps pulling you down, and ask God to give you the focus to keep moving toward what he has ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that already exists in your day, such as while the coffee brews, during a walk to the mailbox, or before you open your laptop in the morning. Sit or stand somewhere quiet, and if you can, keep a notebook nearby so you can write down the specific worries you name. Reading the prayer once aloud, then once more slowly with a pen in your hand, helps the words settle in.

Consider inviting someone you trust to pray this same prayer with you, or to pray it for you on the days you cannot find words. A friend, a pastor, a small group, or a family member can carry part of the load while you take one step at a time. Ask them to check on you in a week, so the prayer becomes a habit you return to rather than a single moment.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every unfamiliar room and every new day. May he steady your steps when the road is uncertain, and surprise you with small signs of his care along the way. May you rest in the knowledge that the God who began this new work in you is faithful to finish it.
