This night prayer for the week ahead is for the close of the day, when your mind is still running through tomorrow’s meetings, the school run, the bills and the conversation you have been dreading. It is meant to be prayed at bedtime, or in the quiet minutes before you turn out the light. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own specific concerns in the same spirit.
Night Prayer for the Week Ahead
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you everything I carried into it. I bring the tasks I did not finish and the ones I could not start. I bring the deadline on Wednesday, the phone call I keep putting off, and the worry about how the week will hold together with so much on it. Please take these things from my hands tonight. I do not need to solve them before I sleep, and I do not need to carry them through the dark.
Watch over the week that is coming. Go before me into every meeting, every errand and every hard conversation. Give me patience with the people I will see, honesty where I need to speak, and the wisdom to know which things need my attention and which I can set down. Guard my family while we are apart and bring us together again with kindness. Where I feel I am falling short, remind me that my worth is not measured by how much I manage to get done.
Keep me safe while I sleep. Quiet my thoughts, ease my body and let me rest without fear. Thank you for the good things from this day, even the small ones: a cup of coffee, a kind word, a moment of laughter. Thank you that you do not sleep and do not forget me. I rest in that today. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am tired and the week ahead feels heavy. Take my worries for the days to come and hold them for me. Protect me and the people I love through the night, and give me strength for what tomorrow asks of me. Let me wake up ready to trust you again. Thank you for today, and for your faithfulness that goes with me into the morning. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as you lie down, letting the words slow your breathing. It reminds you that rest is something God gives, not something you must earn by finishing every task first.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Use this verse to lay down the habit of working late into the night. Ask God to show you where you have been trying to do what only he can do for the week ahead.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Bring the weariness of the coming week to Jesus in prayer. Name the specific burdens you are carrying, and ask him to give you the rest he offers.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Read this passage slowly as you pray about each worry for the week ahead. Turn each concern into a request and notice the peace the passage describes arriving as you finish.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
(WEB)
Ask God to keep your mind fixed on him rather than on every possible problem of the coming days. Pray this verse as a request for steadiness when your thoughts start racing in bed.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular time, such as just after you get into bed or once the house has gone quiet. Keep a notebook on your nightstand and write down the two or three things you most dread about the week ahead. Pray through them one at a time, and close the notebook when you finish. This gives your anxious thoughts a place to land so they do not keep circling in your head.
You can also pray this with someone you live with or a friend who is also awake. Take turns reading the lines aloud, and end by naming one thing each of you is grateful for from the day. Sharing the prayer makes it harder to carry the week alone, and it gives you a companion for the morning.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord keep you through the night and steady you for every day of the week ahead. May his peace settle over your thoughts, and may you wake knowing you are held. Rest well, and trust that the one who watches over you does not grow tired.
