This short morning prayer is for asking God to watch over your grandchildren as the day begins. Pray it first thing, while the house is quiet, or in the car on the way to school, or whenever their names come to mind before the day gets busy. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for My Grandchildren

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of these children. I bring each of them to you before their feet touch the floor. Be near them as they wake, as they dress, and as they look for their shoes and their lunch money. Give them a settled heart when they feel rushed, and help them not to be afraid of the quiz, the friend who is unkind, or the game they are not sure they will win.

Go with them to school, to the bus stop, to the playground, and to the classroom where they will learn new things today. Give their teachers patience and wisdom, and give my grandchildren curious minds and kind hands. Where they feel left out or misunderstood, remind them that they belong to you. Keep their friendships honest and their words gentle. Protect their bodies and their hearts from harm, and let them feel your nearness when I cannot be there.

Father, let this day begin with you and end with you. Whatever they face, let them know they are never alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I hand my grandchildren to you again this morning. Go before them today and walk beside them in every hallway, room and conversation. Give them courage when they feel small, kindness toward people who are hard to love, and a quiet trust that you are with them. Keep them safe and help them grow into the people you made them to be. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many grandparents find the early minutes of the day the easiest time to pray, before phones, messages and schedules fill the air. Sit at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee or tea, or stand at the window and watch the street. If you have a photo of each grandchild, place them on the table in front of you and let your eyes rest on their faces as you speak each name.

You might also invite another family member or a friend to pray the same words on the same morning, so that your grandchildren are covered by more than one voice. If you live far away, pray at the same time as their morning routine begins, and send a short text afterward to let them know you were thinking of them. Keep a small note in your Bible or on your phone with the names and needs you want to bring before God each day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your grandchildren today and behind them as they move through the day. May he guard their steps, steady their hearts, and remind them that they are loved more than they can imagine. May they walk in his peace from the first hour of the morning until they lay their heads down to rest.
