This bedtime prayer is for the end of a day when someone has hurt you, when an old wrong keeps coming back to mind, or when you simply want your heart softened toward others before you sleep. Pray it in the last quiet minutes before lights out, either word for word or as a starting point for your own honest words to God. It works just as well for a parent praying over a child, a spouse praying beside a partner, or a person alone at the bedside.

Bedtime Prayer for a Forgiving Heart

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You everything I am still carrying. I think about the words that were said to me and the way I was overlooked or dismissed. I feel the sting of it again, and some part of me wants to keep count. Please show me where I am holding on tighter than I should, and loosen my grip, one finger at a time if that is all I can manage tonight.

You have forgiven me more than I can repay, and I am grateful for that mercy. Let it flow through me now toward the person I am still angry with, and toward myself for the mistakes I replay in the dark. Give me the willingness to say the words of release even when my feelings lag behind. Guard my sleep, and guard my heart while I rest, so that bitterness does not take root while I am unaware. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I don’t want to go to sleep carrying this resentment. You know the name and the memory that keeps returning. I release it into Your hands now, and I ask You to heal what I cannot heal on my own. Help me wake tomorrow a little lighter, and help me see the other person as someone You love. Thank You for forgiving me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you pray, and let it set the tone. Ask God to make your forgiveness look like His own kindness, not a grudging concession that you have to force out each night.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the grievance plainly and then ask for the strength to bear with it. Pray that the same grace you have received would move you to let go of the debt.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

When guilt or old hurt keeps returning at night, pray this promise over your memory. Ask the Lord to remove the weight of what has already been settled between you and Him.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Let this passage humble you before you forgive. Ask God to help you see that releasing others is part of the way He keeps your own heart open to His grace.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel worn out by the same conflict. Thank God that His mercies are renewed each morning, and ask Him to give you fresh compassion for tomorrow.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed spot, such as the edge of your bed or a chair beside the nightstand, and sit with your hands open or resting on your knees. If a name or memory comes to mind, you can gently open your hand as you pray the word release, which gives your body something to do with the emotion. Keep the phone out of reach so the prayer is not interrupted by the news or messages that tend to stir old feelings.

If you are praying with a spouse, child, or friend, take turns reading one paragraph each and then let silence follow. Someone else can also pray this over you on a hard night, saying your name in place of the first person words. Do not worry if you fall asleep halfway through; a sincere start is enough, and God hears what you could not finish.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgave you go before you into sleep and keep your heart soft and unafraid. May His peace settle over every unresolved word, and may you wake to a morning where mercy feels closer than the hurt. Rest now, and let grace carry the rest.
