This bedtime prayer is for parents, grandparents and others who love an adult child and lie awake wondering how they are doing. Pray it at the end of the day, once the house is quiet and the last message has been sent. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.
Bedtime Prayer for an Adult Child
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you the one I love who is now grown and living a life I cannot fully see. You know where they slept last night, what they are carrying into tomorrow, and the worries they have not told me about. Thank you for the ways you have been at work in them today, even in small things I will never hear about. Let your peace settle over them now, wherever they are, whether they are in a bed of their own, a rented room, or a hospital chair.
I release to you the decisions I cannot make for them: the job, the relationship, the money, the choices that are theirs to own. Help me to keep my hands open rather than gripping what I was never meant to hold. When I feel the old urge to fix, to advise, or to fret, quiet that voice and remind me that you are a better parent to them than I could ever be. Guard their sleep, their thoughts and their heart through the night.
If there is a hard conversation waiting, or a silence between us that hurts, I ask you to soften both our hearts before morning. Give them rest they have not earned and do not need to earn. Wake them gently when the sun comes up, and remind them, and me, that they are loved more deeply than either of us can measure. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, my child is out in the world tonight and I cannot be there. Hold them close, keep them safe from harm, and let them sleep without fear. Quiet the worries that keep them awake, and remind them that you are near. I trust them to you now, and I trust you with them. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed time, such as when you turn off the lamp or after you have brushed your teeth. Sit somewhere quiet and comfortable, and hold something in your hands, like a cup of tea, a wedding ring, or a photograph of your child as they were at home. The small physical act gives your restless mind something to rest on while you speak.
Consider inviting another parent, a spouse, or a friend to pray this same prayer at the same hour, even if you are miles apart. Knowing that someone else is lifting your child up on the same night can make the distance feel smaller, and it gives you a companion when the worry feels heavy.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord watch over your child as they sleep, and may they wake to find his mercy waiting for them. May you rest tonight in the knowledge that you have done what you can and handed the rest to the One who holds them.
