This bedtime prayer for my home is written for the last quiet moments of the day, when the lights are going off and the house is finally still. It helps you hand over the day’s worries, ask God to guard everyone under your roof through the night, and give thanks for the ordinary gifts of shelter and family. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your home needs something specific.

Bedtime Prayer for My Home

Lord, thank you for this home and for the people who live in it. Thank you for the walls that keep out the cold and the roof that keeps out the rain. Thank you for the meals we shared, the laughter in the kitchen, and the small kindnesses that went unnoticed today. Forgive us for the sharp words, the impatience, and the times we pulled away from each other. Wash over what we did wrong today and help us begin again in the morning.

Now that the day is ending, I bring my worries to you and set them down. I think of the bills on the table, the tension in our marriage, the child who has been struggling at school, and the phone call I still need to make. Quiet my mind so I can rest. Watch over each person sleeping here tonight, the ones who are easy to pray for and the ones who are hard to pray for. Guard their sleep, calm their fears, and keep the doors of this house safe from harm.

Father, let this home be a place of peace and welcome, not only for us but for anyone who comes through the door. Make us gentle with one another when we wake up tomorrow. Protect us through the dark hours and bring us safely to the morning. Thank you for staying awake when we cannot. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for this home and for the people sleeping under this roof. I give you the worries I am carrying tonight and ask for rest. Watch over each one of them and guard this house while we sleep. Forgive what went wrong today and help us start fresh tomorrow. Keep us safe until the morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel the weight of keeping everything together. Ask God to build the household on his foundation, so that the work of the day rests in his hands rather than only your own.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a natural one to pray as you turn out the light. Thank God that he gives rest to the people in your home, and ask him to let each sleeper settle into safety.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this slowly over your household at night. Ask God to keep watch over each person in the house, trusting that he never grows drowsy or careless while the rest of you sleep.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your home as a declaration of where your family belongs. Ask God to help everyone living here choose to serve him, both in the good days and the hard ones.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the tiredness of the day to Jesus through this verse. Ask him to lift the burdens each person in your home is carrying and to give them the rest only he can provide.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the evening, once the dishes are done and the last lights are being switched off. You might stand in the hallway outside the bedrooms, or sit for a minute at the kitchen table where the day’s conversations happened. Holding a cup of water or resting a hand on a doorframe can help you stay present rather than rushing through the words.

If others in your household are willing, invite them to pray a sentence each, or to name one thing they are thankful for before the lights go out. A spouse, an older child, or a friend staying the night can join in. Praying together turns a routine ending into a shared act of trust.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep every person who sleeps under this roof and guard their going out and their coming in. May peace settle over this home tonight, and may the morning bring fresh mercy to each heart that rests here.
