This bedtime prayer for our leaders is written to be prayed at the end of the day, when the news has been read, the dishes are done, and you are still thinking about the people who carry public responsibility. Pray it at the edge of your bed, in the car before you go inside, or with your family after the lights go down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Our Leaders

Lord, as this day comes to an end, I bring before You the leaders who govern our city, our country, and the nations of the world. Some of them are awake right now, reading reports, sitting in meetings that ran too long, or lying awake because a decision weighs on them. Give them rest tonight. Quiet the voices that pull at their attention, and let them sleep the way a child sleeps, trusting that they are not holding everything together alone.

Father, give them wisdom that goes deeper than politics. Help them to tell the truth when it is costly, to listen to people they would rather ignore, and to remember the families who will live with the results of their choices. Guard them from pride and from fear. Where they have made mistakes today, forgive them, and show them where to make things right tomorrow. Protect their marriages, their children, and their health, because they are people before they are titles.

I also ask You to watch over the ones who serve under them, the aides, the clerks, the police officers, the nurses, and the teachers whose work keeps public life running. Keep them safe through the night, and bring them home to their families. Your word says that every authority is established under Your hand, so I trust You with what I cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I release the leaders I have been thinking about today into Your care. Grant them rest and clear minds, give them wisdom to decide justly, and protect them and their families through this night. Help them remember that they answer to You. Keep me from anger I cannot carry, and let me pray for them as I go to sleep. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul asks for prayers on behalf of kings and all who are in high positions. Read this slowly, and let it shape your intercession so that you pray for leaders with the same seriousness you would bring to your own family.

Proverbs 21:1

The king’s heart is in the LORD’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that the hearts of rulers are in the Lord’s hand. When a leader’s decision frightens you, pray that God would turn their heart toward what is good, trusting that He is never caught off guard.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This psalm speaks about the gift of sleep given by God. Use it to pray that the leaders you think of tonight would be able to rest, knowing their work is not the only thing holding the world up.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

God told the exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived. Pray this for the leaders over your own community, asking that their work would bring peace and flourishing to the people around them.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Let this verse slow your thoughts before sleep. Pray that the leaders who carry heavy decisions would find stillness in God’s presence and remember that He is exalted over every nation.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment each evening, perhaps right after you turn off the lights or while you wash your face. Keep a short list of the leaders you want to remember, with a name or a role written down, so your mind does not wander. Many people find it helpful to hold something in their hands while they pray, such as a pillow, a wedding ring, or the edge of the bed, as a physical reminder to set the day down.

This prayer works well for a couple, a parent and child, or a small group who meet regularly. Take turns reading the paragraphs aloud so that everyone in the room has a part. If you pray it alone, consider sharing it with a friend who also prays for public life, so that you can remind each other to keep praying when the news turns discouraging.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight and over the leaders who carry the nation’s weight. May He give you rest that does not depend on how the day went, and may His peace settle over your home until morning.
