This short prayer for grace and mercy is for the moments when you feel you have run out of strength, patience, or forgiveness, whether for yourself or for someone else. It is meant to be prayed in the morning before the day gets loud, in the car before a hard conversation, or late at night when regret keeps you awake. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and let your own words fill in the details.

Short Prayer for Grace and Mercy

Father, I come to you today knowing that I need more than I can supply on my own. My patience wears thin by midmorning, and I say things I wish I could take back. I carry worries about money, about the people I love, and about the version of myself I keep failing to be. Please meet me in those places with the grace I cannot earn.

Lord, have mercy on me where I have been unkind, careless, or proud. Forgive the sins I have hidden even from myself, and cleanse the parts of my heart that have grown hard. Give me the humility to receive your forgiveness and the courage to extend it to others who have hurt me, even when it costs me something.

Thank you that your mercy is new every morning and that your grace does not depend on how well I performed yesterday. Be near to the people I am praying for right now, and give me eyes to see where you are already at work. Strengthen me for what this day holds, and let your kindness shape the way I speak and act. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need your grace right now. Have mercy on me, forgive what I have done, and steady me for the next thing I have to face. Help me respond with patience instead of anger, and remind me that you are holding me together. Thank you for your kindness, which never runs out. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Pray these words when you wake up feeling that yesterday’s failures are still weighing on you. Thank God that his compassion starts fresh each morning, and ask him to help you receive it for today.

Ephesians 2:4-5

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…

Use this passage when you feel unworthy of God’s attention. Name the ways you have fallen short, then thank him that his mercy is rich and that his love reached you while you were still far from him.

Psalm 103:8-10

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. 9 He will not always accuse; neither will he stay angry forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us for our iniquities.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when guilt or shame has you expecting punishment. Let the description of God’s patience and gentleness reshape how you approach him in prayer.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel hesitant to come to God. Ask him to help you approach his throne with confidence, trusting that you will find mercy and the grace you need in your time of need.

Micah 7:18

Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn’t retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you struggle to believe that God can really forgive what you have done. Praise him for being a God who delights in mercy and who takes pleasure in showing kindness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as just after you wake up or before the evening meal, and pray the full prayer aloud if you can. Keep a Bible or a notebook nearby so you can read the scriptures slowly, and write down any names or situations that come to mind as you pray. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup of tea or rest them open on your lap as a reminder that you are receiving rather than striving.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a family member going through a hard season. Take turns reading the lines, and let each person add a short sentence of their own. Praying together can remind you that grace is something the whole body of Christ shares and offers to one another.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who is rich in mercy go before you and surround you with his grace today. May his forgiveness settle deep in your heart, and may his kindness give you courage to love the people around you. The Lord bless you and keep you, and make his face shine upon you.
