This bedtime prayer is for the end of a day in which temptation pressed on you, whether that was a habit you are trying to leave behind, a fight you lost, or a quiet pull toward something you know you should not do. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and before you sleep, so that you hand the day’s failures and near misses to God rather than carrying them into the night. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Overcoming Temptation

Father, the day is ending and I bring it to you as it really was. There were moments when I wanted what I should not have, when I reached for the easy escape, the harsh word, the secret I would rather no one saw. Some of those moments I resisted and some I did not. I confess the ones I gave in to, and I ask you to forgive me the way you always forgive, fully and without holding it over me.

Thank you for the strength you gave me when I had none of my own. Thank you for the moments I turned away, even if no one else noticed. Tonight I do not want to rehearse my failures in the dark. I want to rest in your faithfulness and let you be the one who guards what I cannot guard alone. Protect my mind while I sleep, and quiet the voices that feed on tiredness and shame.

Tomorrow will bring the same pulls, the same weak spots, the same old patterns. Give me a clear mind when the temptation comes and the sense to walk away before it becomes a decision. Help me remember that you have made a way out for me every time. I trust you with the morning. Let me wake up ready to try again, not ready to give up. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I know I was tempted today. Forgive what I did wrong, and help me let it go now. Guard my heart and my thoughts through the night, and give me strength when I wake. I trust you to keep me steady until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that the temptation you faced today was not beyond what others have faced, and that God has already provided a way through it. Thank him for the way out you were given, even if you only noticed it afterward.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down, letting it become your own prayer for sleep. Ask God to give you rest that is not dependent on how well you behaved today, and to keep you safe while you are unaware.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to watch over your going out and coming in, including the decisions you will face tomorrow. Pray it for the places where you feel most exposed to temptation.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when shame over a fall is keeping you awake. Ask God to help you receive his lack of condemnation, and to separate the wrong you did from the identity he has given you in Christ.

James 1:13-15

13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.

(WEB)

Bring this passage to God as a way to see temptation clearly, tracing how a desire grows into action. Ask him to show you where that process has started in your life, so you can interrupt it earlier.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each night, perhaps right after you brush your teeth or once the phone is put away and the room is dim. Keep a glass of water or a small object on the bedside table and hold it while you pray, since a physical anchor helps a tired mind stay on the words. If you share a home, you can pray it quietly beside a spouse or roommate, or ask a trusted friend to pray it with you by phone.

If the temptation you are facing is tied to a particular device, place, or hour, move that object or change that routine before you reach bedtime. Then pray the prayer as a way of closing the day honestly, not as a test you must pass. Return to it the next night even if you fell again, because the habit of coming back to God is part of how he strengthens you over time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over you tonight. May he guard your heart and mind, forgive what needs forgiving, and give you rest that does not depend on your own strength. May you wake to a new morning with courage to take the next faithful step.
