This is an evening prayer for a pure heart, a way to bring the day’s thoughts, mistakes and unfinished business to God before you sleep. Pray it at bedtime, after the lights are off, or as you wind down with a last cup of tea. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where they fit.

Evening Prayer for a Pure Heart

Lord, the day is ending and I am bringing it to you. Some of it went well, and I am thankful for that. Some of it did not. I said things I wish I had kept back, I scrolled when I should have been present, and I let small resentments sit in my chest when I should have named them and let them go. Search me, God, and show me what I have not seen clearly. I do not want to carry it into the night.

Create in me a clean heart, as David once asked you to. Wash away the pride that wants to be right, the envy that counts what others have, and the quiet lust or greed that I tell myself is harmless. Where I have been unkind, soften my words to others and give me the humility to say sorry. Where I have been anxious about tomorrow, take that weight from my shoulders so I can rest in you instead of rehearsing every worry.

Guard my sleep and guard my heart while I rest. Keep my thoughts from spinning and my dreams from becoming a place of fear. Let the last thing I think about before I drift off be your faithfulness, not my failures. I trust that your mercy is new every morning, and I receive it again tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and my heart is cluttered. Show me anything I need to confess, and forgive me for it. Make my heart clean and steady before you. Calm my mind so I can rest, and keep watch over me through the night. Thank you for today, and for your mercies that start again in the morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

This is David’s plea after he had failed badly. Use it as a direct request at night: ask God to create a clean heart in you and to renew a steady spirit, even when you feel too tired to change anything yourself.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of lying down and sleeping in peace. Pray it slowly as you settle into bed, letting the words become a deliberate act of trust that God is the one keeping watch while you rest.

Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

(WEB)

Jesus links a pure heart with seeing God. As you pray this in the evening, ask for a clearer view of God’s presence in the ordinary moments of the day you are closing.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses remind you that God’s compassions are renewed every morning. Pray them when the day has left you ashamed, so that you can go to sleep resting on mercy rather than on your own record.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse says God gives sleep to those he loves. Pray it as a reminder that rest is a gift to receive, not a reward you must earn by finishing everything on your list first.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last quiet minutes before sleep, sitting on the edge of the bed or lying down with the lamp off. If your mind races, keep a notepad nearby and write down anything that keeps surfacing, then pray over the list and set the pen aside. Holding a folded blanket or resting one hand on your chest can help you slow your breathing as you pray.

If you share a home, pray this for your household too. A parent can pray it over children after the goodnight routine, and a spouse can pray it together with their partner before turning off the light. Praying it with someone else can keep it from becoming a rushed recital and turn it into a shared act of trust.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he make your heart clean, your conscience at peace and your sleep deep and untroubled. May you wake to his mercies, which are new again in the morning.
