This bedtime prayer is for those who spend their days serving others, whether as nurses, teachers, caregivers, pastors, parents, or anyone who gives their energy away to people who need them. Pray it at the end of the day, once the last task is set down and the house or the ward has grown quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Those Serving Others

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You what I am carrying. I gave my time, my patience, and my attention to people who needed them, and some of it I did not have to give. Forgive me for the moments I was short with someone, for the words I wish I had chosen differently, and for the worry I kept picking up when I should have left it with You. Thank You for the ones I was able to help, and for the small mercies I did not expect, like a kind word or a task finished before I thought it would be.

Now I ask You to take what I could not finish. Let the people I served sleep safely tonight, and let the ones who are hurting feel Your nearness even if I am not there. Where I am tired, renew my strength. Where I feel empty, fill me with what only You can give. Guard my home and my body through the night, and keep me from carrying the day into my dreams. I do not have to hold everything together, because You are the one who holds us all.

Teach me to rest without guilt. Remind me that my worth does not rise and fall with my usefulness, and that You love me even when I have nothing left to offer. Wake me tomorrow with fresh compassion and a willing heart, and go before me into whatever the new day brings. In Your name I pray, Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out from giving, and I need You now. Take the weight I cannot carry any longer, and hold the people I cared for today. Forgive what I did poorly, receive what I did with love, and give me rest tonight. Keep me and my family safe until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you pray, and name the specific weight you are setting down. Jesus invites the weary to come to Him, which means your tiredness is not something to hide from Him.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this as a confession and a comfort at once. Admit the ways you have been working anxiously, then ask God to give you the rest He gives to those He loves.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Ask God to keep you from growing weary in doing good. Thank Him for the good you have done today, and ask for endurance for the work still ahead.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Turn this verse into a request for protection over those who sleep under your care, and over yourself. Pray that God would stay awake for you while you rest.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Bring your depleted energy to God and ask Him to give strength to the weary. Let this verse remind you that your own limits are not the last word about what you can do.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of your shift or after the last person has gone home, while you are still in the place where you worked or at the kitchen table where you unwind. Sitting down helps, and resting a hand on your chest or a cup of tea in your hands can keep your body and attention in the moment. If you are tired enough to fall asleep mid-sentence, that is fine. Let the words finish you, and let God receive them.

If you share a home or a ministry with others who serve, consider praying it together, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Those who give their days to others often find it easier to release the day when someone else is praying alongside them. You might also write one or two names of people you are concerned about on a card and place it beside your bed, then pray for them by name as you finish the prayer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight give you rest that reaches deep into your body and mind. May He remember every act of care you offered today and receive it as an offering. May He guard your going out and your coming in, and wake you in the morning with strength enough for the work He has prepared.
