This prayer is for the times when you want your faith to deepen but do not know where to begin. You can pray it in the morning before the day pulls at you, in the quiet of the evening, or whenever you feel the distance between yourself and God. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words as they come.

Christian Prayer for My Spiritual Growth

Father, I want to grow in you, and I am not always sure how. Some days my prayers feel short and my attention wanders before I have said much at all. I read your Word and forget it by lunchtime. I know what it means to be faithful, yet I often live as though my own effort must carry the weight. Teach me to rely on your Spirit instead of my striving.

Shape my heart so that it slowly looks more like Jesus. Show me the habits that help me listen to you and the ones that crowd you out. Give me patience with myself when I fall short, and give me courage to return to you each time I wander. Let my faith be steady in ordinary places, at my kitchen table, at work, in the car, in the hard conversations I would rather avoid.

I ask you to make me hungry for your presence and to strengthen what is weak in me. Grow in me the fruit of love, peace and self-control, not because I have earned them but because you are faithful to finish what you have begun. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I want to grow closer to you today. I am tired and distracted, and I do not have much to offer. Meet me here as I am. Quiet my restless thoughts, draw me back to your Word, and help me trust that you are working in me even when I cannot feel it. Make me more like Jesus, one faithful step at a time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God that the work of growth is his before it is yours. Ask him to keep working in you, especially on the days you feel little progress.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to renew the way you think, so that your habits and decisions begin to reflect what you read and believe about him.

Psalm 1:2-3

2 But his delight is in the LORD’s law. On his law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

(WEB)

Pray that your delight would settle on God’s Word, so that returning to Scripture becomes a steady source of nourishment rather than a duty you dread.

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

(WEB)

Ask the Lord to help you grow in grace and in knowledge of him, and to keep your eyes fixed on Christ as the center of that growth.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Pray for the fruit of the Spirit to ripen in your daily life, naming one quality you feel is weakest and asking God to cultivate it in you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time, such as just after you wake up or before you open your phone, so the prayer has a place in your routine. Sit somewhere with few distractions, and keep an open Bible or a notebook nearby. Writing down one sentence from the prayer that stands out to you can help it stay with you through the day.

If you pray with a spouse, a friend or a small group, invite them to read it with you and then pause for a minute of silence before anyone speaks. Hearing someone else ask God to help you grow can encourage you when your own faith feels dry.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who began a good work in you keep faithful watch over your growing faith. May Christ become more real to you with every passing day, and may the Holy Spirit strengthen your heart, guide your steps, and bring you deeper into the peace and joy of knowing him.
