This bedtime prayer for my country is for the quiet hour when the day is done and the news, the worries and the divisions are still on your mind. You can pray it at night before you turn out the light, read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God. It asks for peace for the nation, for those who lead and those who serve, and for the rest that comes from trusting the One who keeps watch while we sleep.
Bedtime Prayer for My Country
Lord, as this day comes to an end, I bring my country before You. Thank You for the people who went to work today, for the teachers who spoke to tired children, for the nurses and drivers and shopkeepers who kept things running. Thank You for the freedoms we have and for the ground we stand on. Forgive us where we have been unkind, where we have spoken without listening, and where we have let fear or pride shape our choices.
Be near to those who govern and those who carry responsibility for others. Give them wisdom that is not their own, honesty when it costs them, and a love for the common good that outlasts the next election. Protect the vulnerable tonight: the families without enough food, the people sleeping outside, the ones waiting for news they dread. Be with those who are sick, those who are grieving, and those who feel forgotten. Help us to see one another as neighbors and not as enemies.
Now let me set this burden down. I cannot hold the whole nation in my hands, but You can. Keep the borders and the cities, the farms and the hospitals, the schools and the churches. Guard our sleep and our children’s sleep. Let tomorrow come with mercy in it. I trust You with my country, and with myself, until the morning. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, my country is in Your hands tonight. Give peace to those who lead, courage to those who serve, and comfort to those who are hurting. Forgive what we have gotten wrong and make us kinder than we were today. Watch over the people sleeping in our towns and cities, and watch over me as I rest. Into Your care I give this nation and this night. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, letting it remind you that rest is a gift from God and not something you have to earn. Hold your country in mind and ask that its people would find the same peace tonight.
Psalm 127:1-2
1 Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain. 2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
This passage reminds you that the work of a nation cannot be carried by effort alone. Pray that those who labor for the common good would rest in God’s care rather than be crushed by the weight of it.
1 Timothy 2:1-2
1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.
(WEB)
Paul urges prayer for all who hold authority, and that instruction still applies to your country tonight. Pray for leaders by name if you know them, and for the quiet, peaceable life this verse describes.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Here the psalmist says that the one who guards Israel does not slumber. As you close your eyes, pray that God’s watchfulness would cover your nation and every household in it.
Jeremiah 29:7
Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”
(WEB)
Written to exiles in a foreign land, this verse tells them to seek the welfare of the city where they live. Pray that your own country would prosper in goodness and that you would be a good neighbor within it.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a settled moment just before sleep, after the lights are low and the phone is set aside. Many people find it helps to sit on the edge of the bed with their hands open in their lap, or to hold a small object such as a folded note or a cup of water while they pray. Pray the full version on nights when you have time and the short one on nights when you are almost too tired to speak.
You can also invite others into the habit. A spouse, a child old enough to join in, or a friend on the phone can each pray one paragraph, so that the nation is lifted by more than one voice. If you have children, let them add one line about someone they hope will sleep well tonight.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps Israel keep your country and the people who live in it. May He give them rest that restores, peace that holds, and a dawn full of new mercy. May He keep you, and your family, safe until the morning light.
