This short morning prayer is for a child starting school, whether it is their first day in kindergarten or the first morning at a new school after a move. Pray it over them at breakfast, in the car, or at the door before the bell rings. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words, adding the names of their teacher, classmates and friends.

Short Morning Prayer for a Child Starting School

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the child you have entrusted to us. You know every hallway, every classroom and every face they will see today. Before they walk through those doors, we ask you to go ahead of them and make the way ready. Calm the butterflies in their stomach and steady their breathing when the noise gets loud.

Give them courage to speak up when they need help, and kindness to notice the child sitting alone at lunch. Help them listen well to their teacher, remember what they learn, and feel proud of the small things they manage to do. If they struggle with a letter, a number or a friendship, meet them there and give them a second try. Guard their heart from fear of getting it wrong.

Be the one who stays close when we cannot. Let them know, deep down, that they are loved and known by you before they know anyone else at school. We trust them into your care for this day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, be with our child this morning as they start school. Give them a brave heart, a kind word for others and a calm mind when things feel new. Go before them into every room and every conversation. Keep them safe, help them learn, and bring them home to us at the end of the day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Use this passage when your child is anxious about tests, lessons or decisions. Ask them to trust God with the parts of school they cannot control, and to lean on him instead of on their own understanding.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Pray this when worry starts to build in your child’s chest before the school day begins. Ask God to replace their anxious thoughts with a peace that steadies them as they walk into class.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this for your child’s effort and attitude in class. Ask God to help them work with care and honesty, offering their learning to him even when no one is watching or grading.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer while your child eats breakfast or buckles into the car seat, when the house is quiet enough to focus. Place a hand on their shoulder or hold their hand as you speak. Physical touch helps a young child feel that the prayer is about them, and it gives them something steady to hold on to.

If you cannot pray together in person, pray it alone for them as you drive away from the school gate, or ask a grandparent, friend or church member to pray it for your child on their first day. Many families keep a copy of this prayer on the fridge or in a school bag so it can be read again during the week.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this child and keep them safe as they learn and grow. May he open their eyes to wonder and their hands to help others. Whatever the day brings, may they know they are never alone, and may they come home to a family that is glad to see them.
