This evening prayer is for the night before a new week begins, when the day is finished but tomorrow’s list is still running through your mind. It helps you hand the week to God, rest your body and mind, and ask for protection until morning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Evening Prayer for a New Week

Lord, the day is ending, and I am grateful you carried me through it. Thank you for the small mercies of this day, the bread on the table, the people who checked on me, the moment of quiet I did not expect. Now I bring you the week ahead. I think about the work waiting for me, the meetings and deadlines, the messages I have not answered yet. Some of it feels heavy, and I do not know how every part will turn out.

So I set it down in your hands. Go before me into each day. Give me wisdom for the decisions I must make and patience with the people I will meet. Where I am anxious about money, health, family, or the future, quiet my heart and remind me that you already know what I need. Keep those I love safe while I am not watching over them. Let me rest tonight without guilt for what I did not finish, trusting that you are awake and working when I sleep. Guard my going out and my coming in, in the days to come. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and the week is already pressing on me. Thank you for this day and for being with me in it. I hand you the week ahead, the work, the worry, and the people I care about. Give me enough strength for tomorrow and enough rest tonight. Keep watch over me while I sleep, and let me wake to your mercy again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down. It names the peace that comes from God’s care rather than from your own control over the week. Pray it as a deliberate choice to rest in him tonight.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that striving from early morning until late at night is not the same as trusting God. Use it to release the pressure to prove yourself through constant effort, and ask for grace to rest.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks this invitation to people who are worn out. Bring your exhaustion about the coming week to him, and receive the rest he offers before the new week begins.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These lines remind you that God’s faithfulness is renewed each morning. Pray them as a confidence that tomorrow and the week beyond will meet you with his mercy, even if you feel depleted tonight.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your thoughts keep racing ahead to what might go wrong. Ask God to keep your mind steady on him, so the week’s uncertainties lose some of their grip on your heart at bedtime.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it at the end of the day, once the lights are low and before you reach for your phone or start replaying tomorrow’s schedule. Sit on the edge of your bed or in a chair you use only for rest, and keep something in your hands, such as a cup of water, your planner, or a small object you can hold. Speaking the words aloud helps the prayer settle more deeply than reading silently.

If you share a home, you can pray it together with a spouse, a roommate, or your children, taking turns with the lines about family and work. Anyone who is tired and anxious about the week can also use it. Keep a pencil nearby so you can write down one worry you want to leave with God, then close the notebook and let the prayer carry you into sleep.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over sleepers keep you through this night and every day of the week to come. May he steady your steps, quiet your fears, and give you rest that does not depend on how much you finished. May you wake refreshed, knowing you are held by a faithful God. Peace be on you as the new week begins.
