This evening prayer is written for an expectant mother who wants to bring the day to a close with God, releasing its worries and asking for rest, protection through the night and the courage to face whatever tomorrow brings. Pray it at bedtime, sitting quietly or lying down, and read it aloud exactly as written or let it be a starting point for your own words. Either way, it gives you a steady place to set the day down.

Evening Prayer for an Expectant Mother

Lord, thank You for this day and for every small mercy in it. Thank You for the life growing within me, for the steady rhythm of my heartbeat and the baby’s movements that remind me I am not alone. I bring You the tiredness in my body, the aches in my back, and the restless thoughts that keep circling about the birth, the months ahead, and whether I am ready. You already know every question I have not yet spoken.

Tonight I give You my fears about labor and delivery, about the health of my baby, and about the many changes that are coming. Hold my child safe in my body and keep both of us strong. Calm my mind so that sleep can come, and let my worries rest in Your hands rather than in my own. Guard our home while we sleep, and give my partner and the people who love us the wisdom to care for us well.

Father, I receive Your peace for this night. Wrap me in it as I lie down, and wake me in the morning with fresh strength for the new day. I trust You with the hours I cannot see and with the little one who is still hidden from view. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my body is heavy with this pregnancy. Please keep my baby safe tonight and help me rest. Take my fears about the birth and the days ahead, and give me peace that does not depend on how I feel. Watch over us both until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a way of handing over the night itself. Ask God to be the one who keeps you and your baby safe while you sleep, so that rest becomes an act of trust rather than a struggle.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure to get everything done before the baby comes. Thank God that He gives sleep to His beloved, and ask Him to give you rest in the middle of a busy season.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Bring your racing thoughts about labor and parenthood to this verse. Ask God to keep your mind steady on Him, so that anxious thoughts loosen their grip as you settle down.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly and name each worry you carry about the pregnancy. Then ask God for the peace that guards the heart and mind, trusting Him to answer what you cannot control.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray these words over your household as you close your eyes. Ask the One who never sleeps to keep watch over you, your baby, and everyone who sleeps under your roof.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment after you have washed up, turned off the lights, and gotten into bed or settled into your favorite chair. Place one hand on your belly as you pray, letting the touch remind you of the child God is knitting together. If you have a partner, invite them to pray the words aloud with you, or to hold your hand while you speak them.

If sleep is hard to find, keep a notebook beside the bed and write down anything that keeps coming back to mind. You can then pray through that list line by line, handing each worry to God one at a time. Some expectant mothers find it helpful to ask a close friend, mother or pastor to pray this prayer for them on nights when they feel too tired to speak.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who watches over you tonight give you deep and restful sleep. May He keep your baby safe within you and bring you both through the coming days with strength and joy. May His peace settle over your heart like a warm blanket, and may you wake to find that He has been faithful through the night.
