This morning prayer is for our leaders, the people who make decisions for our families, our towns, our country and our churches. Pray it first thing, while the house is quiet and before the news, the emails and the meetings start pulling at your attention. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Morning Prayer for Our Leaders
Lord, I start this day by bringing our leaders before You. Thank You that authority is never outside Your reach, and that You know every official, mayor, governor, president, pastor, principal and manager who carries weight this morning. Some of them are tired before breakfast. Some are lying awake over decisions that will touch thousands of lives. Some are learning that power is heavier than it looked from the outside. Be near to each of them.
Give them wisdom that is more than cleverness. Help them hear the people they serve, especially the ones who are easy to overlook: the single mother on the bus, the night-shift nurse, the farmer watching the sky, the young person who has no vote yet but will live with every choice. Guard them from pride and from fear, and from the quiet temptation to protect themselves before they protect the vulnerable. Where they are right, strengthen them. Where they are wrong, correct them gently and show them the way.
Father, let honesty be their habit and integrity their reputation. Surround them with trustworthy advisers and keep their families steady while they serve. Give them rest when they need it and courage when they don’t want to speak. Let this day move us toward peace, justice and kindness. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, our leaders need You today more than ever. Grant them wisdom, a clear conscience and humility to listen. Protect them from pride and from fear. Help them serve the weakest among us well, and bring good out of the decisions they will make. Give them peace where they are anxious and strength where they are weary. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
1 Timothy 2:1-2
1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

Paul asks that prayers be made for kings and all in authority. Begin with this verse and name the leaders you know by name, so that your prayer for them is specific rather than general.
Proverbs 21:1
The king’s heart is in the LORD’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires.

This verse reminds you that even the greatest rulers are held in God’s hand. Pray it as a confession of trust, asking God to turn hearts toward what is good and right.
Proverbs 11:14
Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.

Good counsel is a gift. Pray that your leaders would seek wise advisers and listen to them, and that they would not isolate themselves from honest voices.
Micah 6:8
He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

Micah sums up what God asks of people in authority: justice, mercy and humility. Use this verse to pray for the character of your leaders, not just their results.
Romans 13:1-4
1 Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. 2 Therefore he who resists the authority, withstands the ordinance of God; and those who withstand will receive to themselves judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Do you desire to have no fear of the authority? Do that which is good, and you will have praise from the same, 4 for he is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he doesn’t bear the sword in vain; for he is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil.

Paul describes authority as something entrusted by God for the good of others. Pray that those in office would remember their accountability and use their role to protect and serve.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular time that fits your morning, such as while the coffee brews, during your drive, or before you open your phone. Keep a short list of the leaders you want to name, including local officials, your pastor, your children’s teachers and national figures. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to picture a specific person and what they may face today.
Let your hands join the prayer. Hold a cup, rest your palms open on your lap, or write the names on a card you carry with you. Invite someone in your household or small group to pray this with you on certain mornings, so that the burden of leadership is carried together rather than alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give wisdom to every leader who carries weight today, and may He give you peace as you go into your own day. May your work be done with honesty, and may the people you serve be treated with dignity. The Lord keep you and guide every decision you face.
