This morning prayer is for the moment before the day takes hold, when worry about work, family, money or health can start running ahead of you. You can pray it first thing, while the coffee brews or before you pick up your phone. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries in the same spirit.

Morning Prayer for Peace of Mind

Lord, I wake up and my mind is already moving. I think about the meeting at nine, the message I have not answered, the bill that needs paying and the call I keep putting off. Before I reach for my phone, I bring all of it to you. You know what this day holds better than I do, and you are already in it.

Quiet my thoughts this morning. Where I am anxious about what I cannot control, help me to set it down and trust you with it. Give me wisdom for the choices in front of me and patience with the people I will meet, especially the ones who are difficult to love. When I start to rehearse every bad outcome, remind me that you are still on the throne and that nothing has caught you by surprise.

I ask for peace that does not depend on how the day goes. Let me hold onto it when things go wrong and carry it into the conversations, errands and tasks I would rather avoid. Keep my heart steady, and let me begin this day remembering that I belong to you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my thoughts are racing and I need you now. Settle my heart and slow my breathing. Help me take the next right step, and hold the things I cannot fix. I trust you with this day and with everyone in it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names the anxiety directly and then points to prayer and thanksgiving as the way to bring it to God. Pray these words over the specific worries you listed, one by one, and then wait quietly for the peace he promises.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse ties peace to trust and to keeping your mind fixed on God. As you pray it, picture your thoughts resting on him the way a hand rests on a steady rail, and return to that image whenever your mind drifts.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

The psalmist can lie down and sleep because the Lord keeps him safe. In the morning, read this as a statement of what God has already done overnight and pray it as a confession that today is also held in his care.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus tells his listeners not to borrow tomorrow’s trouble. Use this verse to set aside the future you cannot see, and ask for the strength to deal only with the hours of today as they come.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus offers a peace that is different from what the world gives. Pray this verse slowly, naming the kind of peace you most need this morning, and ask him to give you that gift as you begin your day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try to pray it within the first ten minutes after you get up, before the day’s messages and news crowd in. Sit on the edge of your bed, in a kitchen chair or by a window, and keep your hands open in your lap or around a warm cup. If your mind wanders, go back to the first line and start again.

You might also share it with someone who shares your worries, such as a spouse, a roommate or a friend who texts you each morning. Read it together or agree to pray it on the same day, and check in later to see how the day went. Praying alongside another person can make the peace feel less like something you must manage alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over your going out and your coming in be near you today. May the peace that passes understanding guard your heart and your mind, and may you rest in the knowledge that you are loved and held. Go forward into this day with courage and calm.
