This morning prayer is for the person who woke up still tired, whose nights have been broken by worry, restlessness or a mind that will not quiet down. Pray it when you first wake, before the phone and the to-do list take over, or at any point in the morning when you realize the night’s rest did not reach you. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use its themes as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for Restful Sleep

Lord, thank you for bringing me to a new morning. I woke up feeling the weight of a night that did not give me the rest I needed. I thought about the long list waiting for me today, the work deadline, the conversation I keep dreading, the bills, and the tiredness that seems to follow me from room to room. Some of those worries came with me into bed, and some of them woke me up at three in the morning. Please take them from my hands now, because I cannot carry them through another day alone.

Father, I ask you to meet me in the hours I will spend today and in the hours still ahead of me tonight. Quiet the racing thoughts that keep me awake. Settle my body so that when evening comes I can lie down without fear of another restless night. Help me to trust that you do not sleep and do not slumber, and that you keep watch over the people I love while they rest. Give me wisdom to set down what is not mine to fix, and courage to ask for help where I need it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is full. Quiet my thoughts and steady my heart as I begin this day. Let the rest you have already given me be enough to carry me through the morning, and help me to lay my worries at your feet before I pick them up again. Remind me that you are awake and watching over me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, letting each phrase settle before you move to the next. Thank God that his care does not depend on your ability to stay awake or fall asleep. Ask him to make the word safe real to you as you think about tonight.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that striving from dawn to dark is not what God asks of you. Confess any habit of anxious overwork, then ask him to teach you to receive rest as a gift rather than a reward you must earn.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this as a direct invitation. Name the particular burdens making you weary this morning, and bring each one to Jesus by name as you pray the words of his invitation over your own life.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn this passage into a short list of worries, bringing each one to God with thanksgiving. Pray for the peace the verse describes to guard your heart and mind, especially when they start to race again.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for renewed strength for the day ahead. Ask God to renew you in the places you feel depleted, and to help you wait on him rather than rushing ahead on your own energy.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer while you are still in bed, before your feet touch the floor. Keep your phone out of reach so the first words your mind hears are spoken to God rather than to your inbox. If you are sitting up with a cup of coffee, let your hands hold the warm mug as a physical reminder that you are being held. Pray the words slowly enough to hear them yourself.

If you share a home with someone who also struggles to sleep, invite them to pray the prayer with you, or read it aloud to them over breakfast. A spouse, friend or roommate can pray the words over you on the days when your own voice feels too tired to speak. Return to the prayer at midday or before bed whenever the worries start to press in again.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never slumbers keep watch over you through this day and into the night. May he give you rest for your soul and steady peace for your mind, and may you wake tomorrow knowing you were held through every hour. Go in his peace, and rest in his care.
