These morning prayers for volunteers are written for the hours before you leave the house to serve. Pray them over coffee, in the car on the way to the shelter, the food bank, the classroom or the church nursery, or before the first shift of the day begins. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for Volunteers

Lord, I come to you before the day starts to give you the hours I have promised to others. Some of the people I will serve today are tired, hungry, grieving or unsure of their place, and I do not always know what to say to them. Please go ahead of me into every room. Give me patience when a task takes longer than I planned, and gentleness when someone is rude or demanding. Let my hands be steady and my words be kind, even when I am running low on energy or feel I have nothing left to offer.

I also ask you to guard my heart from pride when I am thanked and from discouragement when no one notices my work. Remind me that I am serving you, not only the people in front of me, and that you see what is done quietly. Where I am tempted to be impatient with my team or resentful of the jobs no one wants, soften me and fill me with your peace. Help me to listen before I speak and to help before I am asked. Show me where you are already at work today, and let me be part of it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank you for this new day and for the chance to serve. Go with me to my post. Give me patience, a kind word for each person I meet, and the wisdom to know what is needed. Keep my heart humble when I am praised and hopeful when I feel unseen. Use my small part for your good today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse at the start of your shift, asking God to help you do each task as though he were the one you were working for. It turns ordinary chores like stacking boxes or wiping tables into worship.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel worn down by repeated needs or slow results. Ask for endurance to keep showing up, trusting that your steady faithfulness will bear fruit in its own time.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Use this verse to shape your attitude toward the people you serve. Ask God to help you act justly, show mercy and walk humbly with him throughout the morning.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Pray this as you prepare to meet others’ needs. Ask God to help you set aside self-interest and to notice the people around you, especially those who are easy to overlook.

Matthew 25:40

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(WEB)

Let this verse remind you that every act of care toward a stranger or colleague matters to Jesus. Pray for eyes to see him in the person who most needs help today.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer before you put on your shoes or sign in for your shift, while you are still in a quiet place. If you have a few minutes with a cup of tea or coffee in your hands, let the warmth remind you to ask God for his warmth toward others. You might also pray it while folding a stack of donated clothes or filling a water jug, letting the simple work become a rhythm for your prayer.

Consider asking a friend, family member or fellow volunteer to pray it with you, or to send you a short text with a verse before the day begins. Praying together keeps you accountable to one another and reminds you that you do not carry the work alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you today. May he give strength to your hands and patience to your heart, and may the people you serve feel his care through you. May his peace settle on you when the day is long, and may you rest in the knowledge that your faithful service is seen and valued by God.
