This night prayer is for anyone who goes to bed carrying the weight of the day and wants to hand it over, asking God for a clean slate to wake up to. Pray it in the evening, just before sleep, once the lights are low and the day has finally slowed down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Night Prayer for a Fresh Start

Father, the day is ending, and I am bringing it to you just as it went. Some of it went well, and I thank you for those moments. Some of it went badly. I said things I wish I had not said, I rushed past people who needed me to slow down, and I carried worries I was never meant to hold alone. I lay them down now. Forgive what needs forgiving, and help me forgive what others have done to me today.

Lord, I am tired, and I am not sure what tomorrow will ask of me. Some of my concerns are small and some feel heavy enough to keep me awake. Quiet my thoughts tonight. Keep my mind from circling back to the same fears. Let me sleep the way a child sleeps, trusting that you are awake and watching over the house while I rest. Give me the gift of a new morning, and meet me there with fresh mercy and fresh strength.

Thank you that your faithfulness does not end when the sun goes down. Guard my heart and my family while I sleep. Protect the people I love, the ones I worry about, and the ones I cannot reach tonight. Whatever I failed to finish, whatever I got wrong, I trust you to finish and to mend. Let tomorrow begin as a gift and not a burden. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am ending this day and I need a fresh start. Forgive me for what I did wrong, and help me forgive those who wronged me. Take the worry I cannot put down and carry it for me. Keep watch over me and the people I love while I sleep. Give me a clean and steady morning, and let me meet it with you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Read this slowly before bed, and let it remind you that the mercies of God are not used up at the end of a hard day. Each morning brings a fresh supply, so you can release yesterday’s failures without holding on to them.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this as a statement of trust. Name the things still troubling you, then rest in the image of lying down and sleeping safely because God is the one keeping watch.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use these verses to ask for protection through the night. Picture God as the one who does not doze off, so you can let your guard down and stop managing everything yourself.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Pray this when the past keeps replaying in your mind. Ask God to show you the new thing he is doing, even if you cannot see it clearly yet, and to help you leave yesterday in his hands.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Let this verse loosen your grip on the need to control every outcome. Thank God that rest is something he gives, and ask him to help you accept it without guilt.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent time, ideally after you have brushed your teeth and before you turn off the last light. Sit on the edge of your bed or kneel beside it, and keep your hands open in your lap or resting on your knees. Some people find it helpful to write down one thing from the day they are giving to God and place the paper somewhere out of sight before they sleep.

If you share a home, invite a spouse, roommate or child to pray it with you, reading one paragraph each. If you live alone, consider texting the prayer to a friend who is also winding down, so you can pray it across the distance. Either way, let the prayer end the day, not extend it, and stop once you have said Amen.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never sleeps keep watch over you tonight and give you rest that reaches deep into your body and mind. May his mercy meet you again when morning comes, new as the light itself. Go into the night without fear, and wake to a day that is yours to begin again.
