This prayer is for a father who has just welcomed a child, whether that is his first baby or his fourth. It works well at the bedside during a night feed, in the car on the way home from the hospital, or in the quiet minutes before the house wakes up. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a New Father

Lord, thank You for this child. I am amazed and a little overwhelmed by the gift of a new life placed in my arms. Some days I feel capable, and other days I feel like I am guessing at everything. Thank You that You know exactly what I need before I ask. Give me patience when the crying goes on longer than I expected, and steady hands when I am tired and unsure how to help.

Help me to be present for my wife or partner as well. Her body has gone through so much, and she needs rest, honest conversation, and someone who notices when she is worn thin. Show me how to serve her without keeping score, and how to ask for help when I am running low myself. Guard our marriage through these months when every hour seems to belong to someone else.

Father, I also bring you my fears: that I will fail this little one, that I will miss something important, that I will not be the dad I hoped to be. Remind me that you are the perfect Father and that my child is held by you long before I ever held them. Fill me with the kind of love that grows slowly and faithfully, and make me a man who points my child toward you all the days of their life. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I am learning as I go. Calm my heart in this moment. Give me patience with my child and with my wife, and help me take the next right step, even if it is small. Hold us all close tonight, and remind me that you are awake and watching over this home. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God that children are a gift and not a burden to be endured. Ask him to help you see your child the way he sees them, as a treasure entrusted to your care.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

When you lie awake listening for every sound, pray this promise over your child and over yourself. Ask the Lord to keep watch over your comings and goings, especially the long nights.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

New fathers often feel they lack wisdom. Pray this verse by asking God for the practical insight you need for feedings, sleep schedules, and decisions you have never faced before.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

This verse pictures God as a shepherd who gathers lambs and carries them close. Ask him to help you gather your little one gently, and to be carried by him when you feel weak.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when worry about money, health, or whether you are doing enough starts to crowd your mind. Bring each concern to God in prayer and receive his peace in return.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version during a quiet part of your day, such as early morning before the household is up or late at night after the last feed. Sit in a chair you can stay in, and keep the baby close if they are sleeping on your chest. Your hands can stay busy with a bottle, a burp cloth, or simply resting on the child’s back while you speak.

You do not have to pray this alone. Invite your spouse, a close friend, or your pastor to pray it with you, or ask a grandparent to lift you up over the phone. Many fathers find it helps to read the prayer aloud together with their partner once a week, so that both of you feel supported in the same work of raising your child in the Lord.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this father with strength for each long night and joy for each small moment. May his family feel the steadiness of God’s presence in their home, and may this child grow up knowing how deeply they are loved, both by their earthly father and by their Father in heaven.
