This is a prayer for the children in your life, whether they are toddlers, teenagers, or grown and living far away. You can pray it in the morning before the house wakes up, at a bedside in the evening, or whenever worry about them rises in your chest. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put their names and your own words into it.

Prayer for My Children

Lord, you know each of my children by name. You knew them before they were born, and you know the things they carry today that I cannot see. I bring them to you now, the ones at home and the ones who are out in the world. Watch over their going out and their coming in. Keep them safe from harm they do not know is near, and guard their bodies, their sleep, and their small daily needs.

Give them a heart that loves you more than anything else. Where they are confused about who they are, speak the truth about who you have made them to be. Where they are afraid of failing, remind them that you do not give up on them. Give them friends who build them up, teachers and mentors who are wise, and the courage to say no when something is wrong. Help them to be kind to people who are different from them.

When I fail them, as I sometimes will, cover my mistakes with your grace and show me how to ask their forgiveness. Give me patience when I am tired and words that encourage instead of shame. Let my children grow up knowing they are loved, not because of what they do, but because they belong to you and to us. Hold them close, and let them find their home in you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my children are in your hands right now. Protect them from what they cannot see and steady them where they feel weak. Draw each of them toward you and fill them with your peace. Help me to trust you with them when I want to hold on too tightly. Thank you that you love them more than I ever could. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time when you can pray without interruption, such as during the drive to school, while the coffee is brewing, or just before you turn off the light at night. Some parents find it helps to keep a small card with the prayer in a kitchen drawer or a bag, so the words are ready when worry comes at an unexpected hour. Speaking each child’s name slowly, one at a time, can make the prayer feel personal and focused.

You do not need to pray this alone. Invite a spouse, a grandparent, or a close friend to join you, or ask a small group at church to pray for your children by name. Holding a child’s photo or a piece of their handwriting while you pray can help your mind stay present. Whenever you can, tell your children that you pray for them, so they know they are carried by someone who loves them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless each child you pray for and keep them safe in every season. May his face shine on them and give them peace, and may they grow up rooted in his love and sure of their place within it.
