This night prayer asks God for grace and mercy at the end of the day, for the things you did not get right and for the weight you are ready to set down. Pray it at bedtime, after the lights are off or while you lie awake, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in its shape.

Night Prayer for Grace and Mercy

Father, the day is ending and I bring it to you as it really was. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. I snapped at someone I love, I rushed past a chance to be kind, and I carried worry into rooms where it did not belong. I am sorry, and I ask for your mercy, the kind that does not keep a record of my failures. Forgive what I said and did not say, and help me see the places where I need to make things right tomorrow.

I also ask for your grace, which I cannot earn and do not need to earn. Give me rest that is more than a switched-off body. Quiet the list of unfinished tasks and the replay of hard conversations. Let the things I could not fix today rest in your hands, since they were never mine to hold alone. Guard my sleep, and guard the people I love while they sleep too. Thank you for the small good things from today, the warm meal, the message that came at the right time, the moment of laughter. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I have fallen short today. Have mercy on me and give me grace I did not deserve. Take the weight I cannot carry any longer. Calm my mind, watch over my sleep, and keep my family safe through the night. Let me wake to a new morning with fresh hope in you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words when you feel you have used up all your patience and strength. Thank God that his mercy has not run out, and that a new day brings new mercy with it, so you can lay down yesterday’s failures.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting go of control over the night. Ask God to be the one who keeps you safe while you sleep, so that your rest rests on his care rather than your vigilance.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release guilt you have already confessed. Thank God for removing your sins as far as the east is from the west, and ask him to help you stop picking them back up.

Ephesians 2:4-5

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…

(WEB)

Pray this passage when you feel you have fallen too far to be loved. Thank God that his mercy and love made you alive with Christ even while you were still in your failures, and ask him to help you receive that gift.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for yourself and for those sleeping under your roof. Ask God to keep watch through the night, since the one who guards Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the close of the day, in the same spot where you usually end it, such as your bed, a chair by the window, or the edge of the couch after the dishes are done. Some people find it helps to sit with their hands open in their lap, palms up, as a way of releasing what they carried all day. Keep a notebook nearby if your mind keeps racing, and write down anything that comes to mind so you can pray about it and let it go.

You can also pray this prayer with someone in your home who shares your bed or lives under your roof. Read it together, pausing after each paragraph so each of you can add a few words of your own. Partners, parents and roommates often find that saying their worries out loud helps them sleep more easily, and it reminds the whole household that they are not facing the night alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who neither slumbers nor sleeps keep you safe through this night. May his mercy meet you where you failed today and his grace give you rest you did not have to earn. May you wake to a morning filled with his faithfulness, and may you walk into it lightly, knowing you are held.
