This night prayer for a safe journey is for the hours before a trip, or the night after one has begun. It can be prayed at bedtime, at the end of a long day of driving, or in a hotel room before an early flight. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit more closely.
Night Prayer for a Safe Journey
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You the road still ahead of me. You know every mile of it, every turn, every stranger in the lane beside me and every hour of the drive. I release my worry about the miles to You, because I cannot watch over them all. Keep my hands steady on the wheel, my eyes sharp, and my mind clear when I am tired.
Be with the people traveling with me, and with those who are waiting for us to arrive. Guard the vehicles, the planes, the trains, and the roads we will use, and place Your angels around each of us while we sleep. If plans change, or delays come, let me meet them with patience rather than panic. Remind me that nothing about this journey is outside Your care.
Thank You for the rest You give tonight. Settle my heart so I can sleep without rehearsing every possible danger. Wake me refreshed and ready for the day, and let me arrive safely, in peace, and with gratitude for Your faithfulness along the way. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am tired and the journey is long. Take the road ahead of me and everyone with me into Your hands. Keep us safe through the night and through the miles tomorrow. Quiet my fears and let me rest in Your presence. Thank You that I am not traveling alone. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 121:7-8
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
(WEB)
Pray this as a promise over your going out and your coming in. Ask God to keep you from harm on the way and to bring you safely home, trusting that His watch does not end when the sun goes down.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
This verse fits a bedtime prayer well. Speak it slowly, letting the words settle your breathing. Thank God that rest and safety both come from Him, and that you can lie down without carrying every anxiety about the journey.
Psalm 91:11
For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.
(WEB)
Pray this verse for the people traveling with you as well as yourself. Ask God to send His angels to guard each person, on the road, in the air, or on the water, and to keep them from the kind of trouble no one can foresee.
Isaiah 43:2
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.
(WEB)
When the journey feels overwhelming, pray this verse as a reminder that God walks through difficulty with His people. Ask Him to be near in any rough stretch of road, delay, or unexpected storm, and to give you courage to keep going.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”
(WEB)
Use this verse to pray against fear before the trip begins. Ask God to make you strong and steady, and to remind you that He goes before you and does not leave you, even when the destination is still far off.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer at the end of the day, after you have packed your bag or finished checking the route, and before you turn out the light. Sit or kneel somewhere quiet, and if you can, hold something that represents the trip, such as car keys, a boarding pass, or a folded map. Let your hands be still as you speak, and pause after each paragraph to notice what you feel.
If you are praying for someone else who is traveling, such as a spouse, child, or friend, read the prayer aloud while they are nearby, or pray it over them by name before they leave. A family member or friend can also pray it with you, taking turns with the paragraphs. Keep the prayer short enough to return to during the drive or the flight if worry rises again.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you on every road and keep you through the night. May His peace settle over you as you sleep, and may you wake to find Him already at work in the day ahead. Wherever you are going, may you arrive safe, rested, and held in His care.
