This prayer is for anyone who is about to travel or already on the road: by car, plane, train, or on foot, whether the trip is a few miles or across the world. Pray it before you leave, as you pack the car or wait at the gate, or whenever the distance ahead starts to feel heavy. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the same concerns.

Prayer for Those Traveling

Lord, you are already at the destination and you are already on the road with us. Thank you for the people who will carry us, the drivers, pilots, conductors, and mechanics whose skill we depend on, and the roads, rails, and skies that you hold in your hands. Go before us and make the way plain. Keep our vehicles sound, our minds clear, and our attention on the road or the task in front of us. Where we are tired, give us rest. Where we are anxious about delays, missed connections, or what waits at the other end, settle our hearts with the knowledge that nothing is outside your care.

Watch over everyone who is traveling today, especially those who are far from home, those who are traveling for a hard reason, and those who have no one waiting for them at arrival. Guard the children in the back seat and the elderly in the airport wheelchair. Protect those who travel for work and carry the weight of other people’s expectations. Keep us patient with strangers, generous with our time, and ready to help when someone else is struggling. And bring every one of us home safely, to the people and the places that love us. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, keep us safe on this journey. Guide the hands that drive, steer the plane that carries us, and watch over the people sharing our road or our row. Calm our fears and steady our breathing. Bring us to our destination well, and bring us back to the people we love. Thank you that we never travel alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse covers the whole trip, from the moment you leave to the moment you return. Pray it as a promise you are asking God to keep over your going out and your coming in.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you pull out of the driveway or board the train. Ask God to send his angels to guard you, and let the picture of being watched over settle the nerves that come with leaving.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Long journeys wear the body down, so pray this verse for strength when you are worn out in a crowded terminal or a long stretch of highway. Ask God to renew your energy for the next part of the trip.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when plans shift, flights are canceled, or the route changes without warning. Ask God to direct your steps and to help you trust him when you cannot see the whole path ahead.

Mark 4:39

He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

(WEB)

Pray this when the trip feels stormy, whether from bad weather, turbulence, or your own rising panic. Ask Jesus to speak peace into the situation and into your heart as the wind and waves seem to rise.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the main prayer while you are still at home, sitting in the car before the engine starts, or in the quiet minutes before a flight begins to board. Put a hand on the steering wheel, the seat back, or the bag you are carrying, and let the object remind you that God’s care is with you as you move. If you are traveling with others, invite them to pray the shorter version together, each person adding one request for the journey.

You can also pray this for someone else who is leaving, a child going off to college, a friend heading overseas, or a parent driving through the night. Speak their name in the prayer and ask God to go with them specifically. Many people find it helpful to text the traveler the shorter prayer before they go, so they carry the words with them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile of the way. May his peace meet you at every stop, and his protection surround you until you are home. May you arrive rested, well, and glad to be where you are going.
