This daily prayer for a pastor is for anyone who wants to lift their spiritual leader before God each day, whether that is a senior pastor, a youth minister, an elder or a missionary. It can be prayed in the morning before the week begins, during a quiet moment at lunch, or in the evening as you reflect on the day. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak from your own heart.

Daily Prayer for a Pastor

Lord, I thank You for the pastor You have placed over our church. You know the weight of the sermons he has to prepare, the phone calls that come at midnight, the hospital visits, the budget meetings, and the questions people bring him that he cannot always answer. Give him wisdom when he is unsure, patience when he is tired, and a clear sense of Your voice above every other voice competing for his attention.

Guard his heart from pride when people praise him and from despair when they criticize him. Protect his marriage and his children from the neglect that ministry can quietly cause. Give him rest that is real, not just a day off he spends worrying about the church. Let him walk closely with You in his own private prayer life, so that what he gives to others flows from a well that is full.

Strengthen his body and his mind, and surround him with friends and elders who will pray for him honestly and speak truth into his life. Fill him with joy in the work and let him see the fruit of faithful seed-sowing, even when the harvest is slow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my pastor is carrying a lot today. Give him clarity for what he needs to decide, strength for every conversation, and a fresh sense of Your presence. Keep his family safe and his soul at peace. Let him hear You clearly and rest in Your love. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 6:19

On my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News…

(WEB)

Paul asked the church to pray that words would be given to him when he spoke. Pray this for your pastor, that God would open his mouth with courage and clarity whenever he teaches or counsels.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

This verse describes leaders who keep watch over souls and will give an account. Pray that your pastor would carry that weight with joy rather than dread, and that his work would be a delight to God.

Colossians 4:2-4

2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, watching therein with thanksgiving; 3 praying together for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds; 4 that I may reveal it as I ought to speak.

(WEB)

Paul asked for prayer that doors would open for the message. Pray that your pastor would find open doors this week, both in his preaching and in his everyday relationships with people who do not yet know Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

(WEB)

Paul told the church to respect and esteem those who labor among them. Pray that your congregation would honor your pastor in practical ways and that he would feel that respect as encouragement.

Romans 15:30

Now I beg you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me…

(WEB)

Paul asked the believers in Rome to join him in prayer. Pray this for your pastor as an act of partnership, asking God to strengthen the bond between him and the people he serves.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose one consistent time each day, even if it is only five minutes. Many people find that early morning, before the phone starts buzzing, works best, while others pray during a drive or on a lunch break. Keep a note on your phone or a card in your Bible with your pastor’s name so the prayer becomes a habit rather than a good intention.

Consider holding something in your hands while you pray, such as a church bulletin, a sermon outline you took notes on, or a card with his name. This gives your attention a physical anchor. Invite a few other members to pray the same prayer with you, so your pastor is covered by a small group of people who care about his well-being.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your pastor and keep him, make His face shine upon him and be gracious to him, and give him peace that goes beyond understanding. May he know that his labor is not in vain in the Lord, and may he be refreshed by the faithfulness of the people he serves.
