These prayers for children’s faith are written for parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone who longs to see a young person come to know God and keep trusting him as they grow. You can pray them at bedtime, over breakfast, in the car on the way to school, or whenever a child’s spiritual life is on your heart. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and add the names and details only you would know.

Prayers for Children’s Faith

Father, thank you that you know every child by name and that you love them more than we ever could. We bring to you the young lives entrusted to us, with all their questions, their doubts, their quick enthusiasms and their quiet fears. Open their hearts to know you personally, not only as a story they have heard but as a living presence who listens when they speak. Help them see your hand in ordinary days, in the people who care for them and in the beauty of the world you made.

Give them a faith that can handle honest questions. When they wonder why something happened, or why prayer sometimes feels empty, remind them that you welcome their wondering and that you are not threatened by it. Plant in them a steady trust that grows deeper with each year, so that when friends pull them in other directions or when life grows hard, they will remember whose they are. Make us patient teachers, consistent in our example and generous with our time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I ask you to draw this child close to yourself today. Help them know that you are near, that you hear them, and that they belong to you. Give them curiosity about your word and courage to live it out at school, at home and with their friends. Where they feel unsure, give them peace, and where they feel strong, keep them humble. Let our home be a place where faith is spoken of naturally and lived out with warmth. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to shape the child’s habits and loves now, while their heart is still forming. Ask him to bring wise adults and godly friends into their path who will point them toward him.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask that God’s commands would live in your own heart first, so that faith becomes something you talk about naturally in ordinary moments. Pray that your child sees it woven into everyday life.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Let this psalm lead you to thank God for the child as a gift from his hand. Ask him to guard their life and to help you receive them as he does, with gratitude and without taking them for granted.

Mark 10:14

But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to me! Don’t forbid them, for God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these.

(WEB)

Pray that Jesus would welcome this child as he welcomed the children brought to him. Ask that they would never feel too small or too young to come to him, and that nothing would keep them from him.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Bring this image of a shepherd to God and ask him to gather your child in his arms. Pray that they would feel his gentleness especially on hard days and rest in knowing he carries them close.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as bedtime, the drive to school or the first few minutes after breakfast, so the prayer becomes part of the rhythm of your days. Sit beside the child or hold their hand if that feels natural, or pray quietly on your own while they are at school. Keeping a small notebook nearby can help you write down what you notice about their faith over time, and it gives you specific things to thank God for when you pray again.

You do not have to pray this alone. Invite a spouse, a grandparent, a Sunday school teacher or a close friend to pray it with you, and let the child hear those voices lifting their name to God. Over time, they will learn that prayer is something the whole family does together, and that their faith belongs to a larger family of believers who love them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this child and keep them, may his face shine upon them and give them peace. May they grow in wisdom and in love for him, and may they know, in every season, that they are held by a Father who never lets go.
