These prayers for safe travels are written for the moments before a trip: the drive to the airport, the morning you set out on a long highway, the flight that makes your stomach tighten. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as it is written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the fears and hopes you carry. It works just as well in the car, at the gate, or at the kitchen table the night before you go.

Prayers for Safe Travels

Lord, I bring my journey to you before I take another step. You know the route I am taking, the roads and the skies I will cross, and the people who are waiting for me on the other end. Be with the driver beside me and with every stranger sharing the road, the rail, or the runway. Keep my vehicle sound, my attention sharp, and my hands steady on the wheel or the bags I carry.

I also pray for the worries I am trying not to name. If my heart races at the thought of what could go wrong, calm it with the knowledge that you go before me and stay behind me. Guard the people I love who are staying home, and let them rest knowing that I am in your care. Give me patience with delays, kindness toward those who serve me on the way, and gratitude for every safe mile I cover. Bring me home again, and let me arrive grateful for the way you carried me there. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am about to go, and I ask you to go with me. Watch over my path, my body, and the ones traveling beside me. Calm my nerves, guide my choices, and keep the people I love in your hand while I am away. Bring me back safely, and help me remember that I am never out of your sight. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before you start the car or board the plane. Ask God to keep your going out and your coming in, and let the words remind you that his watch covers every part of the trip.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the specific ways you feel vulnerable on the road or in the air. Thank God for the angels he has charged over his people and ask him to send that care your way.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Pray this when a trip feels like it might carry you through deep water or hard ground. Ask God to be with you in whatever you meet on the way, trusting his presence more than the outcome.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to the planning stage of a trip, when you are weighing routes, flights, and timings. Ask God to make your paths straight where you cannot see ahead.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are far from home or heading somewhere unfamiliar. Remind yourself that God’s hand reaches to every place you could go, and ask him to lead you there with care.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the main prayer in the early morning, before the day’s rush begins, or in the last quiet minutes before you pull out of the driveway. Keep your keys, your boarding pass, or your suitcase handle in your hands as you pray, so your body joins the words. If you are traveling with others, ask one of them to pray it aloud while the rest of you listen and say “Amen” at the end.

You can also pray this prayer for someone else who is leaving, such as a child heading off to school camp, a spouse flying for work, or a friend driving through the night. Speak their names into the prayer, and then pray the shorter version over them as they walk out the door. Some people keep a note on their phone with these words so they can pray them at any airport gate or highway rest stop when the anxiety rises.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you on every road and stay beside you in every sky. May he keep your steps steady, your heart at rest, and your loved ones held close while you are away. And may he bring you home again, safe and grateful, to the place where you belong.
