This short morning prayer is for asking God to give you clear sight and wise choices as the day unfolds. Pray it when you first wake, before your phone or your to-do list pulls your attention away, or at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in hand. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once you find your footing.

Short Morning Prayer for Discernment

Lord, I wake up to another day, and I already feel the weight of what it holds. There is the conversation with my manager that I have been dreading, the forms that need signing, the friend who asked for advice and is waiting on me. Before any of it starts, I ask you to give me a clear mind. Quiet the noise of my worries long enough for me to hear what you want from me today.

Help me tell the difference between what is urgent and what is important. When I face a choice about how to spend my money, my time, or my words, let me pause long enough to ask whether it honors you and the people you have placed around me. Guard me from snap judgments made out of fear, pride, or the wish to please everyone. Give me patience with my own confusion, and let me admit when I do not yet know what to do.

Shape the way I see the people I will meet today. Let me listen before I speak, notice the person who is struggling even when they do not say so, and resist the easy assumption about someone who annoys me. Give me a wise heart for the small decisions and the large ones alike. I trust that you see the whole road ahead, even when I can only see the next step. Lead me in that next step, and I will walk it with you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need wisdom before I speak or decide anything today. Slow my reactions, show me what matters most, and help me see the people in front of me clearly. Give me the courage to choose what is right even when it is not what I want. Thank you for hearing me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Praying this verse at the start of the day reminds you that wisdom is something you can ask for directly. Name the specific decision you face, and ask God to give you the clarity he has promised to generously provide.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to bring your own understanding to God and admit where it falls short. As you pray, ask him to make your path straight in the tasks and conversations ahead of you today.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Read this promise slowly and imagine God as the one teaching and guiding you through the hours ahead. Ask him to make his direction easy to recognize, especially when you feel unsure which way to go.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your choices feel dark or unclear. Ask God to light the next step rather than the whole road, and thank him that his word gives steady light for ordinary decisions.

Philippians 1:9-10

9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ…

(WEB)

This passage prays for love that grows in knowledge and insight. Use it to ask God to help you judge what is best today, so that your actions are honest and blameless before him and others.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the first ten minutes after you wake, before you check messages or news. Sit in a chair near a window if you can, and keep your hands open in your lap or around a warm mug. Some people find it helpful to write down the one decision or conversation they are most worried about, then read it back to God as part of the prayer.

If you share a home with others, consider praying it together at breakfast or before everyone heads out. A spouse, roommate, or child can each name one choice they face that day, and the group can pray over those requests briefly. You can also return to the prayer at midday if the morning has already gotten away from you, asking for wisdom again for whatever comes next.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a clear mind and a steady heart for every choice this day. May he show you the next step when the way seems hidden, and may his peace guard your thoughts as you go about your work and your relationships. Go in the strength he gives, trusting that he will lead you well.
