This short morning prayer is for making wise choices as your day unfolds, from the first decision you face after you wake up to the many small choices that follow at work, at home, and in your conversations with others. Pray it early, before the phone and the to-do list take over, or on the drive in, or over a cup of coffee. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names of the people and tasks you already know you will meet today.

Short Morning Prayer for Making Wise Choices

Father, I come to you before the day gets loud. I do not know everything that is coming. I will be asked to decide things quickly, sometimes with little information and sometimes with people pressing me to answer right away. Give me a clear mind this morning and a settled heart. Help me notice the difference between what is urgent and what is important, and keep me from mistaking my own impatience for wisdom.

Show me where I am likely to stumble today. Maybe it is the email I want to send in anger, the extra purchase I do not need, the shortcut that would cost someone else, or the word I might say to a coworker or a child that I cannot take back. Guard my tongue, my time, and my money. Let me slow down long enough to ask what is good, what is true, and what would honor you before I act.

Thank you that you give wisdom generously and do not scold us for asking. I trust you with the choices I can see and the ones I cannot yet see. Walk with me through this day, and let my decisions reflect your care for the people around me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need wisdom right now, in this moment, before I speak or act. Slow my reactions and quiet the pressure I feel to decide too fast. Show me the next right step and the one thing I should not do. Help me choose what is kind, honest, and wise. Thank you that you hear me even in a brief prayer. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

Pray this verse when you feel you lack the insight for a decision you must make today. It reminds you that asking God for wisdom is itself a faithful act, and that you do not have to pretend you already know the answer.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your own reasoning feels tangled or when you are tempted to rely only on what seems sensible to you. Pray that you would trust God’s direction over your first instincts as you go through your appointments and tasks.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Pray this for the path ahead, especially in conversations or projects where you are unsure of the next step. Ask God to guide your eyes and your attention so that you notice what needs your care.

Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

(WEB)

Colossians 4:5-6

5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

(WEB)

Pray this for the people you will speak with today. Ask that your words would be gracious and seasoned with care, so that the choices you make in conversation would reflect wisdom toward those who are watching and listening.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time each morning, such as right after you make your bed or before you check your phone, so that the prayer becomes a habit rather than something you remember only when things go wrong. Sit somewhere quiet, and if your hands are restless, hold a cup of tea or a pen and write one decision from the day ahead beside your name. Let that small act anchor your prayer in real life.

If you live with a spouse, roommate, or friend who also wants to grow in wisdom, pray the prayer together and each name one choice you expect to face. You might also keep a short note of the prayer in your wallet or on your desk, and look at it again at lunch or before a meeting that matters. Coming back to it through the day keeps your choices tied to your prayer rather than to the pressure of the moment.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a steady mind and a gentle tongue today. May he show you the good path when the choices feel unclear, and may he give you the courage to take the next faithful step. May the people you meet see his kindness in the way you decide and act.
