This short morning prayer for safe travels is written for the moment before a drive, a flight, a train ride or any trip that takes you away from home. Pray it as you wake, while you pack, or in the car before you turn the key. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the road ahead.

Short Morning Prayer for Safe Travels

Lord, I start this day by handing you the road ahead. You know every mile I will drive or fly, every turn, every stretch of highway and every airport gate. Before I leave, I ask you to go with me. Keep my hands steady on the wheel and my mind clear and alert. Give me patience with other drivers, with long lines, and with delays I did not plan for.

Protect the people traveling with me, and the strangers sharing the road, the sky or the platform. Guard the vehicle I am riding in, the tires, the brakes and the engine, and keep me from careless shortcuts. If there are weather changes, icy patches or heavy traffic ahead, make me wise enough to slow down and to wait when waiting is the safer choice. Keep my family and friends at home in your care while I am away, and bring me back to them in good health.

I trust you with the hours I cannot see. Thank you that you are awake when I am tired, and near when I feel far from home. Go before me, walk beside me and watch over me on every step of this journey. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am heading out now. Be with me on the road, keep me alert and calm, and bring everyone in this trip safely to where we are going. Watch over the people I love while I am gone, and bring us all home again. I trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray these words as you step out the door, asking the Lord to guard your going and your coming. They remind you that your departure and your return both rest in his keeping, not only the miles in between.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and thank God for the angels he sends to watch over his people. Ask him to place his protection around you on the highway, in the air or on the platform.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when plans feel uncertain or the route is unfamiliar. Ask God to make your path straight, especially where a wrong turn or a missed connection could cause trouble.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Let this promise steady you when you feel anxious about being far from home. Pray that God would strengthen you in any unfamiliar place and help you hold on to his presence.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Remember that no place you travel to is outside of God’s reach. Give thanks that his hand leads and holds you, wherever the day takes you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still at home, ideally before you pick up your car keys, lock the front door or zip your suitcase. Stand by the door or sit at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in your hands, so your body slows down enough for your words to catch up. Holding something ordinary, like a set of keys or a boarding pass, can turn your attention back to God each time your thoughts drift toward the trip.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, such as a spouse, a roommate or a friend who is waiting to hear you arrive. Ask them to pray for the same journey and to check in with you afterward. Sharing the prayer turns a solitary trip into something you carry together with the people who love you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you on every mile and every hour of this day. May he keep your steps steady, your mind clear and your heart at peace. May he bring you safely to your destination and back again to the people who are waiting for you.
