This prayer is for the times when your thoughts race faster than you can keep up with them, when worry sits on your chest in the middle of the night or follows you through a normal workday. It can be prayed in the morning before the day starts, in the evening when the house finally goes quiet, or in the middle of a hard moment when you need steadiness right away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a Peaceful Heart

Father, you know what is crowding my mind today. There are the things I cannot control, the conversations I dread, the bills I keep adding up in my head, and the quiet fear that I am not doing enough for the people I love. I bring each of these to you one at a time, because I cannot hold them all at once and I am tired of trying. Please untangle the knots in my thoughts and show me which worries are mine to set down.

Still my heart when it races at the smallest noise. Remind me that you are awake when I am not, and that nothing has slipped past your notice. Where I have been carrying what was never mine to carry, take it from me and let me breathe. Give me the calm that does not depend on how my circumstances turn out, and let it settle into the ordinary places of my day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my mind is loud right now. Quiet it with your presence. I give you the next hour and the thing I am most afraid of. Steady my breathing and steady my heart. Let me rest in what I know of you, even when I do not feel it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Pray this when anxiety has started to take over your planning. Name each worry as a specific request, then thank God for something you already see him doing, and notice how the peace described here comes as a guard over your thoughts.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your mind keeps wandering to the future. Pray it slowly, and each time your thoughts drift, bring them back to the one you are trusting, letting steadiness come from fixing your attention on him.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Pray this when peace seems to depend on everything around you going well. Ask Jesus to give you the kind of peace the world cannot hand out or take away, and let that gift be enough for this hour.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Turn to this verse when your mind is too busy to pray in words. Be still for a few breaths, let the noise fall away, and remember that God is God whether or not you have solved anything yet.

Matthew 11:28-29

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel weary to the bone. Bring the exhaustion and the heaviness to Jesus as you are, and ask him to teach you a gentler rhythm for the work that is actually yours to do.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this first thing in the morning, before the phone and the to-do list pull you in. Sit somewhere you can be undisturbed, and keep a cup of tea or a glass of water in your hands while you speak. Holding something warm can ground you when your thoughts are scattered. If you are praying in the evening instead, read it slowly and pause after each sentence to let it settle.

You might also pray this with someone who is struggling, reading it aloud together or taking turns with the lines. A trusted friend, a spouse, or a member of your small group can carry your worries with you when you feel you cannot carry them alone. Let them pray for your heart, and pray for theirs in return.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over every sleepless hour guard the hearts of those who come to him tonight. May he hold each worry gently, quiet what is loud within them, and give a steadiness that holds through whatever the coming day brings.
