This simple prayer is for parents, grandparents and others who love an adult child and want to bring that love before God. It can be prayed in the morning, during a drive, at a kitchen sink, or late at night when worry keeps you awake. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and concerns that are closest to your heart.

Simple Prayer for an Adult Child

Lord, you knew this child before they took their first breath, and you know them far better now than I ever will. I bring them to you today with all the love I have and all the things I cannot control. Their work, their friendships, their choices, their health, and the decisions I hear about only in passing are all in your hands. Help them to hear your voice above the noise of their busy life.

Father, when they struggle, be their steady ground. When they feel lonely or unsure of who they are becoming, remind them that they are loved and known. Give them wisdom for the choices that lie ahead, and give them courage to ask for help when they need it. Surround them with people who speak truth and kindness into their lives. Guard their hearts from bitterness and from fear.

And Lord, help me to love them without holding on too tightly. Teach me when to speak and when to be quiet, when to offer advice and when simply to listen. Where I have failed them, forgive me and heal what I have broken. Let my relationship with them reflect your patience and grace. I trust you with the parts of their story I will never see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my son (or daughter) is grown, and I cannot carry every worry about them. Watch over them today. Guide their steps, protect their heart, and let them feel your nearness. Help me trust you more than I trust my own fears. Thank you that they belong to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

Pray these words over your adult child as a blessing, asking the Lord to keep them, shine his face toward them, and grant them peace. It is a good way to end a day or a conversation with them.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this psalm when you are anxious about where your child is going, whether across the country or simply across town. Ask the Lord to guard their going out and their coming in, now and always.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this for your child when they face a major decision. Ask God to help them trust him fully, not leaning only on their own understanding, and to direct their paths clearly.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When your worry about your child begins to take over, bring each concern to God in prayer with thanksgiving. Ask that the peace of God would guard your heart and your child’s heart as you wait on him.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray that your child will find strength when they feel weary or worn down. Ask the Lord to renew their energy and help them keep going when the way feels long and hard.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as the first cup of coffee in the morning or the quiet minutes before bed, and pray this prayer at that same time each day. Keeping a small card with your child’s name on it, or a note in your phone, can help you remember to pray even on busy days. Some parents find it helpful to light a candle or sit in the same chair each time, giving the habit a physical place to rest.

You do not have to pray alone. Invite your spouse, a close friend, or a small group from church to join you, and ask them to pray for your child by name. If your child is willing, you might ask them what they would like you to pray about, and then pray those requests faithfully. Let the prayer lead you back to God’s faithfulness, even when the answers take longer than you hoped.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this son or daughter and keep them safe in every season of life. May he make his face shine upon them, and may they know they are deeply loved, always and without condition. May they walk in wisdom, rest in grace, and grow into the person God made them to be.
